The delight and excitement of the modern world leave little or no time for us to think of the ultimate question: like whence we came, whither we go, who sent us into this world and to what end or purpose, who is our creator, what is good and evil, heaven and hell, life hereafter. If now and then we spare a moment of solitude to think about these and similar questions, this scholarly delightful and refreshing book by Muhammad Zia Ullah will go to a great length to answer these. This book discusses God of Islam, Allah, whose attributes have been manifested in the Quran. This book is different from similar other books because it tackles the subject with an open mind and logic. The basic source is the Quran, which is an introduction of God to man. His main line of argument comes from the Quran from which he gives suitable Quotations. Each quotation in original Arabic text is accompanied by suitable English translation. He also dwells on Shariah, Sufi tradition, and modern achievements of Science and Philosophy in a flawless style. The authors' premise is in the mans' own experience and his own comprehension of the material world that he must learn to know God. His God is God of reason. To arrive at the view of Allah, he meditates, thinks aloud aducing arguments from everyday life. He discusses nature of human love , its relationship with with Allah is his love for His creations. He clarifies the concept of divine beauty and links it with human life. He does not dwell on philosophical aspect alone. He tackles such complicated problems as the Quranic doctrine of crime and punishment obedience and reward with the help with help of erudite sources. The final impression is that of an enlightened modern man praising Allah in terms that are easily grasped by any man today. It is handiwork for those who wish to find a philosophical logical answer to their doubts and wish to persuade others into an act of praise which is the highest attribute given to man.

This Volume discusses a number of various topics which the author thinks the reader will find to be very interesting. Among them are: Surat al-Fatiha (the Opening Chapter of the Holy Qur’an), its significance, implications, mysteries and linguistic marvels; a number of selected supplications (original Arabic texts and author’s translations) and the stories behind them in order to demonstrate how one can get to know his Lord from supplication; a discussion of the biography of the Prophet of Islam which occupies the bulk of this book and which takes the reader back to the 7th Century and how the Arabs were living in their Peninsula, their interactions with followers of Paganism, Christianity and Judaism. He narrates details of a plot to assassinate the Prophet’s mother and later to assassinate him, wizardry and witchcraft during the time; how the Islamic message was born, fought for survival and flourished, the two Jewish ladies who became the Prophet’s wives, covenants of the Prophet with the Christians of Najran, Yemen, and with Medina, Hijaz (Arabic texts and translations), how the immediate family of the Prophet of Islam did not receive the recognition it deserves and the injustice meted particularly to his only surviving daughter, Fatima, whose inheritance was confiscated... It also contains three important chapters: 1) one about the Qur’an and its miraculous aspects, 2) another about the rising Islamophobia throughout the West and Islam bashing in Japan, and 3) a discussion of “jihad”, the most misunderstood Islamic concept, and of the Qaida menace: Wahhabism, Takfirism and terrorism. Throughout the book, the author stresses the unity of the adherents to the Abrahamic faith, advocating peaceful coexistence between the Muslims of the world and followers of all other religions; after all, according to him, we all are members of one and the same family which our parents, Adam and Eve, started.

The history of Islam as the faith of God has been buried and lost to antiquity, but the message in the Quran has been gaining renewed visibility as both a very negative and as a positive influence. In spite of its growing visibility, there are baffling issues, as with all religions, whether the individual, in reality, adheres to the tenets of the Quran and the Faith. There is clearly a phenomenal misunderstanding prevalent about Islam and the Quran. The author undertook a serious study of the Quran over several years and dispassionately stresses the importance and relevance of the text to contemporary times where heated arguments persist as to which is the 'better/true religion. The author presents direct quotes from the Quran and provides explanations thereof based on textual commentaries and her personal understanding with the sincere hope that those who are interested in knowing the basic facts in the Quran get a clearer understanding of this preserved word of God.

This monumental study examines issues of anthropomorphism in the three Abrahamic Faiths, as viewed through the texts of the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament and the Qur’an. Throughout history Christianity and Judaism have tried to make sense of God. While juxtaposing the Islamic position against this, the author addresses the Judeo-Christian worldview and how each has chosen to framework its encounter with God, to what extent this has been the result of actual scripture and to what extent the product of theological debate, or church decrees of later centuries and absorption of Hellenistic philosophy. Shah also examines Islam’s heavily anti-anthropomorphic stance and Islamic theological discourse on Tawhid as well as the Ninety-Nine Names of God and what these have meant in relation to Muslim understanding of God and His attributes. Describing how these became the touchstone of Muslim discourse with Judaism and Christianity he critiques theological statements and perspectives that came to dilute if not counter strict monotheism. As secularism debates whether God is dead, the issue of anthropomorphism has become of immense importance. The quest for God, especially in this day and age, is partly one of intellectual longing. To Shah, anthropomorphic concepts and corporeal depictions of the Divine are perhaps among the leading factors of modern atheism. As such he ultimately draws the conclusion that the postmodern longing for God will not be quenched by pre-modern anthropomorphic and corporeal concepts of the Divine which have simply brought God down to this cosmos, with a precise historical function and a specified location, reducing the intellectual and spiritual force of what God is and represents, causing the soul to detract from a sense of the sacred and thereby belief in Him.
