Der vor allem für die "Hartmut und ich"-Reihe bekannte Bestseller-Autor, Journalist und Fußballexperte wählte aus dem großen ef-Kader genau elf Gesprächspartner aus. Sein Arbeitstitel in Anlehnung an Tuvia Tenenboms Erfolgsreportagen: "Allein unter Libertären". Uschmanns "Elf" spielt stellvertretend für eine dreistellige Zahl wichtiger Stammautoren und für in den zurückliegenden 20 Jahren mehr als 1.300 ef-Autoren und -Interviewpartner. Die Autorenschar produzierte in den vergangenen zwei Dekaden auf mehr als 12.000 Seiten knapp 7.000 Artikel - alleine im gedruckten Heft, dazu kommt die tägliche Online-Arbeit.
