A tese consiste em um estudo da história econômica do Rio Grande do Sul, que caracteriza o desenvolvimento capitalista nessa região durante a Primeira República (1889-1930), enquanto um caso especialmente singular e distinto em relação às demais regiões brasileiras. Tendo em vista a trajetória histórica dessa região, o estudo identifica a estrutura e o movimento da economia regional, analisa sua composição setorial, suas relações com o mercado interno e os mercados externos (demais regiões brasileiras e exterior) e caracteriza a expansão agrícola, comercial e industrial, a evolução demográfica e a integração do mercado regional ocorridas durante o período em foco. Descreve e interpreta as, ações econômicas do Estado (administração pública estadual) que contribuíram decisivamente para a definição do processo de desenvolvimento capitalista na região, fomentando uma reforma econômica e social de amplo alcance histórico. Investiga as características de formação e expansão da indústria, o principal setor capitalista na economia regional, bem como o processo de constituição do mercado de trabalho nessa região, estabelecendo as características do padrão regional de desenvolvimento industrial. A interpretação desses diversos aspectos da história econômica regional permite concluir que, no período em análise, processou-se a gestação e a operação de um determinado "modelo" de desenvolvimento econômico, correspondente a uma trajetória regionalmente específica de transição para as relações capitalistas de produção e de generalização da produção de mercadorias.

This book examines the trajectory of the historical knowledge about journalism produced by its scholars in Brazil, from the early accounts originating from the Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute in the 19th century to the specialized academic field at the turn of the 21st century. The history of journalism historiography shows that during the Empire and the Old Republic, the press was idealized as a means of education and a form of mirror of events. After the New State, there was a tendency to view it as an instrument for manipulating public opinion and a suspicious documentary source in the eyes of historians. Finally, with the end of the Military Regime, and with the emergence of the area of communication studies, it came to be analyzed as an element of mediation of public debate and a space for sociability. Regarding this last phase, Daros argues that despite aspirations to subordinate journalism history to communication history, the field still lacks more significant historiographical undertakings beyond print media. This volume is aimed at scholars of journalism studies and media history, the historiography of the press and journalism, the history of historiography, and Brazilian historiography.
