Aquest treball d’investigació recull per primera vegada tots els programes de ràdio que es van fer en català, durant el segle XX, a l’estranger. El llibre té dues parts: «Una història de L’hora catalana. El programa de ràdio dels catalans emigrats i exiliats a Amèrica» i «Les emissions internacionals en llengua catalana». L’hora catalana, que va començar a Buenos Aires l’any 1928, no solament va ser el primer programa de ràdio en català fora de Catalunya, sinó que va ser també la primera programació en llengua estrangera que es va fer a tot Amèrica per i per a les comunitats d’immigrants, i a la qual, anys després, s’hi va afegir altres Hores Catalanes de ràdio produïdes a Montevideo, Santiago de Xile, Valparaíso, l’Havana, Mèxic, Caracas i altres ciutats. Des de 1939 fins a 1976, els espais emesos en ona curta des de l’estranger van permetre mantenir present la llengua catalana a la ràdio, sobretot fins a la meitat de la dècada dels seixanta. Només aquesta dada en reflecteix la transcendència. Durant el franquisme, van transmetre programes en català: Ràdio Moscou, la BBC, Radio España Independiente, Ràdio París, Office of War Information (CBS, NBC), Ràdio Belgrad, Ràdio Praga, Ràdio Budapest, Ràdio Pequín, Ràdio Transmundial (Mònaco) i Ràdio de les Valls. Més endavant, també ho van fer: Ràdio Andorra, la BRT de Bèlgica i Ràdio Exterior d’Espanya. De totes aquestes emissores, se’n parla a la segona part. Martí Garcia-Ripoll Duran és llicenciat en Filologia Catalana per la Universitat de Barcelona. Des de 1984 treballa d’assessor lingüístic a Televisió de Catalunya, al Departament de Producció Aliena (Doblatge i Subtitulació). Col·labora en el programa L’altra ràdio, de Ràdio 4, des de 1987. Cinto Niqui Espinosa és doctor en Ciències de la Comunicació per la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona i llicenciat en Filologia Catalana per la Universitat de Barcelona. Des de 1992 és professor associat del Departament de Comunicació Audiovisual i de Publicitat de la UAB. Dirigeix i presenta el programa L’altra ràdio, de Ràdio 4, des de 1985.

This manual is intended to fill a gap in the area of Romance studies. There is no introduction available so far that broadly covers the field of Catalan linguistics, neither in Catalan nor in any other language. This book examines the cultural production of Catalan intellectuals in Cuba through a reading of texts and journeys that show the contrapuntal relationship between transcultural identities and narratives of nationhood. Both the concept of transculturation and its instrumentalization to tame conflict within nationalist projects are problematic. By uncovering and examining the contradictions between the fluid character of identities in the Cuban context of the first half of the twentieth century and nationalist discourses, within both the Catalanist community of Havana and Cuban society, this book joins wider debates about identities.
