This is the tale of three Australian bomber squadrons at war, flying with RAF Bomber Command in the early part of Britains bombing offensive upon Nazi Germany, from August 1941 to September 1942. Nos 455, 458 and 460 Squadrons operated Hampden or Wellington twin-engine bombers from bases in Yorkshire or Lincolnshire, flying impossible missions, using inadequate equipment and navigation methods to try to hit the most formidably defended targets in the world. It provides the first ever detailed combat history of these three squadrons in their initial incarnations, using original sources. This campaign saw the only major and ongoing Australian contribution to the war against Hitlers Germany. It was proportionally the bloodiest in Australian and British military history, with the survival rate among the aircrews dropping by Autumn 1942 to about 25 percent. Themes include: The Australianisation process by which Australian personnel were brought in by the RAAF to gradually turn what were essentially British units into almost fully Australian ones. The gross inefficiency of bombing in general, and of early-war bombing in particular. The terrifying and brutal nature of World War II air warfare, as experienced by the airmen. The tragic fates of aircrew. The moral and existential quandaries faced by combat leaders. The resilience of the bomber squadron as a social organism which maintained enough morale for most men to carry on, despite the unit being turned into a veritable revolving door - with new crews arriving from training units as fast as the older crews were shot down. The gradual emergence of more rational and effective methods to the RAFs bombing war, preconfiguring the methods it would use with much greater success through 1943-45.

From 1939 to 1942, Bomber Command was very weak in terms of human and material losses. The navigational means with which to accurately guide bombers to targets was almost completely lacking while the enemy defensive network inflicted serious casualties. 205 Group RAF provided the only mobile force of heavy night bombers in the Mediterranean theater in the Second World War. It operated mainly from bases in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Italy, with occasional excursions to Malta, Greece and Iraq, attacking tactical and strategic targets according to the demands of the wider war in the theater. The force was relatively small when compared with the numbers of aircraft available to Bomber Command in the Western European theater, and it carried on using the venerable Vickers Wellington long after this aircraft had been relegated to the training role in the United Kingdom.Like their UK-based counterparts the night bombers were intended to operate in a strategic role, bombing targets away from the immediate battlefront. However, the demands of the war in the Middle East and Mediterranean soon diverted the bombers from their strategic role and saw them operating much closer to the front line in support of the hard pressed ground forces.The bomber squadrons in North Africa usually operated from Advanced Landing Grounds scraped out of the bare desert, with only a few tents for shelter. In Italy they did have more or less permanent bases, but they still lived in tents (if they were lucky) often surrounded by a sea of mud. There were no pubs, often no beer, and the only contact with their families were the eagerly awaited letters from home. Also the squadrons in England did not have Rommel continually knocking on their door. Thus, the operations of the night bombers in the Middle East and Mediterranean were often governed by the general progress of the war in the theater. The ebb and flow of the land battles not only determined the activities of the night bombers, but also determined their location. This book tells their story.

In 1967 Canberra bombers from 2 Squadron RAAF were sent to Phan Rang air base in South Vietnam as part of the Australian contribution to the Vietnam War. Using the Magpie call sign, they first operated at height but soon switched to concentrate on low-level bombing. Many low-level aircraft were hit by ground fire but the tough Canberras took the punishment without losses. Then, on 3 November 1970, Magpie 91 disappeared without trace-ironically from a high-altitude mission well above the ground fire. March 1942. Java is about to fall. An Australian military dispatch rider and a Dutch air force transport pilot embark on a frightening escape from the advancing Japanese that takes them from Bandung to a crash landing just north of Darwin. Formed in Canberra in April 1942, the squadron flew operational coastal patrols before eventually being relocated to the secret MacDonald Airfield, north of Pine Creek in the Northern Territory, and eventually Batchelor, near Darwin. This is, however, more than a story about the 900 bombing raids, reconnaissance missions and attacks on Japanese shipping that the squadron flew in its three years of existence under Australian control.
