Giovanni Morandi (Pergola 1777 – Senigallia 1856) fu maestro di cappella, insegnante di canto e compositore, conosciuto soprattutto come autore di musica vocale sacra e per organo. Strinse rapporti di amicizia con compositori (Rossini tra questi), cantanti, librettisti e impresari. La diffusione delle sue musiche fu garantita da diversi editori, tra i quali Cipriani e in particolare Ricordi; assieme a padre Davide da Bergamo può considerarsi la figura più rappresentativa nella musica per organo italiana della prima metà dell’Ottocento. Stampata da Cipriani di Firenze nel 1823-24, nei primi 5 fascicoli organizza le sonate nella successione Offertorio – Elevazione – Post Comunio, mentre nell'ultimo comprende una Pastorale e due pezzi senza titolo. L'importanza della Raccolta risiede principalmente nella qualità artistica dei pezzi, caratterizzati da grande freschezza di idee e salda struttura formale, e nello stile di scrittura, che ridimensiona l’immagine diffusa e unilaterale di Giovanni Morandi come autore strettamente legato al linguaggio teatrale. Il lavoro di revisione, che ha affrontato un’edizione caratterizzata da errori numerosi e talora vistosi, e le indicazioni sull’esecuzione proposte nell’edizione critica, si sono basati sull’analisi interna dei pezzi e sull’esame sistematico degli autografi. * * * * * Giovanni Morandi (Pergola 1777 – Senigallia 1856), a chapel master, singing coach and composer, is best known for his sacred vocal and organ music. He befriended composers (Rossini among them), singers, librettists, and impresarios. His music was disseminated by several publishers, among whom Cipriani and especially Ricordi. Together with Father Davide of Bergamo, he was the most significant early 19th-century Italian organ composer. It was printed by Cipriani, Florence, in 1823-24. Sets 1 to 5 all follow the Offertory - Elevation - Post Communio sequence, No. 6 has a Pastoral and two untitled pieces. The importance of the Gran Raccolta lies in the sheer musical quality of its pieces, sporting fresh ideas and solid form, as well as in its style, contradicting the widespread and one-sided image of Morandi's music as operatic. This edition, based on a source with many and sometimes egregious mistakes, as well as our suggested performance directions, are founded on a detailed analysis of the pieces and the inspection of the original manuscripts.
