Questa che presentiamo è una raccolta di scritti di Anna Fulgida Bartolacelli dal carattere autobiografico. Il nucleo principale di essa è costituita dal cosiddetto "Piccolo Diario" che tale non è essendo stato composto in un lasso di tempo relativamente breve molti anni dopo i fatti descritti. Questi perciò risentono di una interpretazione, presente anche materialmente nel testo, che è propria della sua maturità spirituale e abbracciano solo un periodo della sua vita previlegiando l'infanzia e la fanciullezza. Trovandoci perciò di fronte all'omissione di fatti importanti ma anche all'assenza di periodi interi della sua vita si è voluto attingere ad altri suoi scritti senza per questo riuscire a colmare le lacune in modo non del tutto soddisfacente. La rinuncia all'utilizzazione di testimonianze o racconti di terze persone ha permesso di rispettare il carattere autobiografico di questo lavoro. Si è scelto di collocare in nota brani di lettere e di altri scritti in modo da permettere al lettore di approfondire certi episodi o concetti rilevanti sui quali l'autrice non si è soffermata. Si noterà chiaramente come le parti del discorso collocate dopo il racconto della vita, hanno un carattere più intimo attingendo ad esperienze personali raccontate durante gli incontri con gli ammalati. Tutto questo permette di suddividere il testo in due parti fondamentali: la prima con un'attenzione maggiore ai fatti esteriori e la seconda che considera soprattutto il mondo interiore della protagonista nelle sue espressioni, reazioni e motivazioni. Relativamente a questo secondo ambito dove alcuni concetti ritornano ma con ricchezza di dettagli sempre nuova abbiamo preferito riportarli così come sono stati stesi lasciando ai lettori la possibilità di approcci diversi per cogliere tutta l'esuberanza della sua personalità interiore.

This book explores Darwinism in modern Italian literature. In the years between Italy’s unification (1861) and the rise of fascism, many writers gave voice to anxieties connected with the ideas of evolution and progress. This study shows how Italian authors borrowed and reworked a scientific vocabulary to write about the contradictions and the contrasting tensions of Italy’s cultural and political-economic modernization. It focuses, above all, on novels by Italo Svevo, Federico De Roberto and Luigi Pirandello. The analysis centers on such topics as the struggle against adverse social conditions in capitalistic society, the risk of failing to survive the struggle itself, the adaptive issues of individuals uprooted from their family and work environments, the concerns about the heredity of maladapted characters. Accordingly, the book also argues that the hybridization and variation of both narrative forms and collective mindsets describes the modernist awareness of the cultural complexity experienced in Italy and Europe at this time.

"Critical interest in biography and autobiography has never been higher. However, while life-writing flourishes in the UK, in Italy it is a less prominent genre. The twelve essays collected here are written against this backdrop, and address issues in biographical and autobiographical writing in Italy from the later nineteenth century to the present, with a particular emphasis on the interplay between individual lives and life-writing and the wider social and political history of Italy. The majority of essays focus on well-known writers (D'Annunzio, Svevo, Bontempelli, Montale, Levi, Calvino, Eco and Fallaci), and their varying anxieties about autobiographical writing in their work.
