This book explores Italian science fiction from 1861, the year of Italy’s unification, to the present day, focusing on how this genre helped shape notions of Otherness and Normalness. In particular, Italian Science Fiction draws upon critical race studies, postcolonial theory, and feminist studies to explore how migration, colonialism, multiculturalism, and racism have been represented in genre film and literature. Topics include the role of science fiction in constructing a national identity; the representation and self-representation of “alien” immigrants in Italy; the creation of internal “Others,” such as southerners and Roma; the intersections of gender and race discrimination; and Italian science fiction’s transnational dialogue with foreign science fiction. This book reveals that though it is arguably a minor genre in Italy, science fiction offers an innovative interpretive angle for rethinking Italian history and imagining future change in Italian society.

Per rileggere con pacato giudizio questi tre racconti di Alfred De Musset (1810-1857), Le due amanti, Federico e Berneretta, Mimì Pinson, conviene ritornare ai giorni del romanticismo francese, quando il poeta appena diciottenne, vide comparire il suo primo volume di versi nelle vetrine delle librerie. Tutti gli elementi di un’epoca letteraria vi sono compendiati, abilmente rielaborati e amabilmente satireggiati. C’è la coscienza dell’uomo che soffre perché ha creduto e crede ancora nell’amore e c’è l’arguzia del narratore che vuol scherzare sugli amori giovanili e su come vengono narrati dagli scrittori del suo tempo. Nelle Due amanti De Musset descrive sé stesso traviato dalla leggerezza e dall’incostanza delle passioni. In Federico e Berneretta vi sono presenti i temi della Signora delle Camelie, tenuti entro i limiti d’una realtà più schietta. In Mimì Pinson, si prelude alla Bohème, con uno schizzo, un profilo, un accenno elegante ed insieme commovente. L’universo femminile è centrale in tutti questi racconti, caratterizzato dall’autore, anche nella corruzione, sempre come il ruolo migliore.
