This book provides an important new contribution to debates around housing policy and its impact on community cohesion. There has never been a more prescient time to discuss these concepts: the book provides an interpretation of housing, race and community cohesion in a highly politicized and fluid policy context. It is designed to initiate discussion and debate but this should not be esoteric and limited to a group of academics. Rather the objective is to bridge academic and policy audiences in the hope that this fusion provides a basis for a new agenda to discuss these topics. Race and community have been key features of social housing policy over the last 20 years with many high-profile interventions, from the proactive approach by the Housing Corporation to support black and minority ethnic housing associations, to the influential Cantle Report documenting segregation in towns and cities following riots, and the National Housing Federation led Race & Housing Inquiry leading to sector wide recommendations to achieve equality. However, volume of policy interventions and reports has not been matched by academic outputs that co-ordinate, integrate and critically analyse 'race', housing and community. Housing, Race & Community Cohesion is the first systematic overview of 'race', housing and community during this tumultuous period. The material presented is robust and research based but also directly engages with issues around policy and delivery. It is designed to reflect the interests both of the academic research community and policy makers on both sides of the Atlantic. It is not rooted to specific policy interventions that could quickly date but instead focuses on developing new ways to analyse difficult issues that will help both students and practitioners now and in the future.

The contributors analyse the implications of social exclusion, offering suggestions for good practice in the allocation of housing for black and other ethnic minority groups. Contradictory forces are at play at the close of the twentieth century. There is a growing closeness of peoples fueled by old and new technologies of modern aviation, digital-based communications, new patterns of trade and commerce, and growing affluence of significant portions of the world's population. Television permits individuals around the world to learn about the cultures and lifestyles of peoples of physically distant lands. These developments give real meaning to the notion of a global village. Peoples of the world are growing closer in new and increasingly important ways. Nonetheless, there are disturbing signs of a growing awareness of ethnic differences in all parts of the world the United States included and a concomitant rise in ethnic-based conflicts, many of them extraordinarily violent in nature. Fear, resentment, intoler-ance, and mistreatment of the "other" abound in world news accounts. Not only does this phenomenon pose an interesting juxtaposition to the concept of the emergent glo-bal village, but its emergence in the post-cold war era internationally and the post-civil rights era in the United States raises significant and compelling questions. Why are such conflicts occurring now? How do analysts explain these developments? The essays in Race and Ethnicity in Comparative Perspective lucidly explore some of the complexities of the persistence and re-emergence of race and ethnicity as major lines of divisiveness around the world. Contributors analyze manifestations of race-based movements for political empowerment in Europe and Latin America as well as racial intolerance in these same settings. Attention is also given to the conceptual complexi-ties of multidimensional and shared cultural roots of the overlapping phenomena of ethnicity, nationalism, identity, and ideology. The book greatly informs discussions of race and ethnicity in the international context and provides an interesting perspective against which to view America's changing problem of race. Race and Ethnicity in Com-parative Perspective is a timely, thought-provoking volume that will be of immense value to ethnic studies specialists, African American studies scholars, political scientists, his-torians, and sociologists.

Housing Race And Law written by Martin MacEwen and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-09-11 with Science categories.

Equality of opportunity in housing is a key issue in social justice in Britain today. To the extent that it patterns an individual's educational, social and economic development, housing constitutes a crucial battleground in the fight against racial discrimination. Housing, Race and Law is the first publication to examine the law in relation to issues of housing and race in both the private and public sector. It places these issues in the broader context of the development of anti-discrimination legislation, outlines the current legislation and examines its impact in relation to owner occupation, public housing, housing association tenancies and private lets. Throughout, the book emphasizes the practical impact of the various legislative provisions, and discusses the responses of the principle institutions from government departments and relevant professions to the Commission for Racial Equality and the Community Relations Councils (or Racial Equality Councils). It argues a case for a new approach to appraisal, review and enforcement. By collating material from a wide variety of sources, the author provides an original assessment of the Race Relations Act of 1976 and its impact on housing which, in its provision of cogent material and arguments for reforms, is designed to be of value to practitioners, academics and those concerned with racial discrimination.

This key text explores the nature and extent of racial discrimination, and the successes and failures of equal opportunities programmes. A successful balance of important recent articles and substantial contributions specially written for the volume, it presents analyses of institutional racism in immigration law, housing, social work, employment training and the criminal justice system. The contributors explore changes over time and examine the interwoven strands of `race', class and gender that form the pattern of disadvantage. They then discuss the formulation, implementation and outcomes of equal opportunities policies in the local state and the private sector, rigorously investigating both `liberal' and `radical' appro
