El Cipitio comes from El Salvador and migrates through Mexico to the United States. He searches for his eccentric family, his mother, father, and long-lost twin brother, El Duende. His father, El Cadejo, is an evil demon deported from Spain by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand. He has eternal life inherited from his evil father, El Cadejo. El Cipitio's hatred and rage towards his mother and father is limitless. He lies, cheats, steals, and bribes his way into electoral office, becoming the mayor of Los Angeles and president of the United States. At the other end of his relentless shenanigans is La Cholita, a tough barrio homegirl who shows him the love and hope he was always wanted. Years later, El Cipitio meets his twin brother, El Duende. Hope in Times of Darkness sends a message that we can be agents of positive change, and that minority youth in impoverished areas can succeed in life and become productive citizens of our society. The author, a Salvadoran American, lived in El Salvador as a child but grew up in South Central Los Angeles during the late 1970s and 1980s. He also lived in Rochester, Minnesota; Washington, D.C.; and Alexandria, Virginia. In each of these cities, he observed the dynamics and challenges of the Salvadoran community. As he has both lived and transcended these struggles himself, he is able to depict a realistic and compassionate picture of the Salvadoran American/Latino experience throughout this book. The author focuses on social justice issues and contends that government, community-based organizations, elected officials, and community leaders can help create hope and opportunities for our youth, and thereby help improve our society. Here, a tropical paradise exists with inexplicable, ancient ruins and puzzling writings of an unknown culture. Steamy, rugged mountain ranges are inhabited by strange Sasquatch-like creatures. They have come down to the villages to kidnap the locals for generations. Terrifying stories of abduction and cannibalism are passed on by the villagers to their children. These are some of the incredible tales that the Solomon Islanders have lived with for decades and you will read about in this spellbinding book. Author Marius Boirayon is the son of the World War II central France maquis (resistance) leader, and grew up in Mount Hagen in the Papua New Guinea Highlands. Following a career in the Royal Australian Air Force and as an aircraft/helicopter engineer working in outback Australia, he decided in 1995 to go to the Solomon Islands to live.
