Excerpt from Racine in England I trust the title 'Racine in England' has led no one to expect a startling discovery in the biographical sphere. I have none to offer. It has not yet been suggested that Jean Racine ever set foot upon our shores, or that he was tempted at any moment in his career (as his friend the Fabulist undoubtedly was tempted) to cross the Channel and join the little group of French gentlemen in London whose exile was cheered by the wisdom of Saint-Evremond and the grace of Madame Mazarin. My subject is the reception which the tragedies of Racine met with among our ancestors, and the reputation they have borne during the seven or eight generations which have passed since they were first brought to the notice of English people. It would be strange if it had always stood at a dead level, and in any fair account of the matter several phases ought to be distinguished; but upon the whole, let it be said at once, the fluctuations of favour and disfavour do not seem to have been considerable. It is known that Racine was read from the first, in the original, by the small class of English people who, in the age of Dryden, looked eagerly to France for novelties in literature. A much wider public saw English translations or imitations of his plays performed upon our stage in the last quarter of the seventeenth century and the first of the eighteenth. Similar experiments had been made much earlier, and continued to be made, with Corneille. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Corneille and Racine For the greater part of the translations in the present volume the writer is responsible. Save in a few passages in the "Cid," where the version in the measure of the original, has been supplied by a friend, he has thought it better to render the meaning of the French verses into English prose than to attempt verses of his own. He is not aware of any English translation into verse of the plays of Corneille which would be endured now, even by the most patient reader. The best, perhaps, is Ambrose Philip's English version of Racine's "Andromaque," known under the title of "The Distressed Mother," which must have found admirers in London during the last century; for many editions of it were printed, and it was several times performed upon our stage. The translations of the choruses in "Athalie," by Randolph and Knight, will be acknowledged in their proper place. Excerpt from Racine: An Historical Narrative Racine was foreseen. This fact is worth knowing, for in this respect its origin was different from that of most pioneer settlements that rose out of the Wilderness. Gilbert Knapp carried the city under his hat for years before the opportunity came to put his plans into effect, and had he not been ready to take instant advantage of that opportunity when it came, other men would have been the founders of Racine, and his long nourished plans would have come to naught. Excerpt from Racine: Iphigenie In presenting this volume for use in the higher institutions of learning in America, an attempt has been made to offer the best of everything that is to be said in connection with one of Racine's leading tragedies. A comprehensive bibliography sets forth the names of those who have discoursed on the classic French Iphigenie in the history of literary and dramatic criticism, while a separate list enumerates the modern annotated editions of this tragedy intended for use by students in France, Germany, and England. The text itself has been stamped already ne varietur in the excellent edition made by Paul Mesnard for the series of Les Grands Ecrivains de la France, and yet it has been considered advisable to deviate therefrom in certain particulars. In detail the punctuation of v. 369 has been altered. In accordance with modern usage, the endings of the imperfect indicative and of the conditional, -ais, -ait, -aient, are substituted throughout for the older -ois, -oit, -oient. Likewise ai is written for oi in faible, faiblesse, and in verbs in -aitre. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Racine's Phèdre: Edited With Introduction And Notes IN preparing this text I have had in view the needs of students sufiîciently advanced to be primarily interested in it as literature. There are in Phèdre few verbal and syntactical difiiculties that need explaining as compared with the number of mythological allusions and the like, and so I have thought best to put the notes at the bottom of the page. In writing both introduction and notes I have occasionally profited by the French school editions of Lanson, Bernardin, ]acquinet, etc. I have not attempted to give all of Racine's classical imitations, but merely the most striking. Unless otherwise stated, the verse renderings of Euripides are by Arthur S. Way (the Tragedies of Euripides in English Verse, Macmillan Co., 1894) those of Seneca are by Ella Isabel Harris (the Tragedies of Seneca, Henry F rowde.
