In this dissertation, we have studied totally eight topics which are focused on but not limited to radar sensor networks (RSN) from a signal processing perspective. We propose the definitions of ZCZ/LCZ (Zero Correlation Zone/Low Correlation Zone) sequence-pair sets, provided three methods to construct optimized optimized punctured LCZ/ZCZ sequence-pair sets and study their properties in chapter 2 and 3. We further investigate the waveform design problem for radar system, radar sensor network, sonar sensor network and MIMO radar system from chapter 4 to chapter 7. In addition, we study radar sensor network from the view of information theory in chapter 8. We also study compressive sensing and apply it to RSN to further investigate the system performance in chapter 9 and chapter 10. In chapter 11, we briefly conclude our work in this dissertation. The main innovation works of this dissertation are as following. We propose the LCZ/ZCZ Sequence-pair Sets that have ideal autocorrelation sidelobes and cross correlation values during LCZ/ZCZ. We also provide three methods to construct the Optimized Punctured LCZ/ZCZ Sequence-pair Sets which is a specific case of the LCZ/ZCZ Sequence-pair Sets. We not only theoretically prove that the sequence-pair sets constructed by our methods satisfy the definitions of the Optimized Punctured LCZ/ZCZ Sequence-pair sets, but also provide examples for each method and analyze properties of the Optimized Punctured LCZ/ZCZ Sequence-pair sets to help further investigating our proposed codes. The main purpose of pulse compression is to raise the signal to maximum sidelobe (signal-to-sidelobe) ratio to improve the target detection and range resolution abilities of the system. We apply the Optimized Punctured Binary Sequence-pair to the Radar system as the phase coded waveforms which is a kind of pulse compression codes. Comparing with the Barker and P4 codes of corresponding length, the Radar system within the Optimized Punctured Binary Sequence-pair could clearly improve the detection performances. Since multiple radar sensors can be combined to form a multi radar system to overcome performance degradation of single radar along with waveform optimization, we theoretically study RSN design using phase coded waveforms. We apply our newly proposed codes to RSN and analyze the detection performance of the system. We also apply the proposed ternary codes to the Sonar Sensor Network (SSN) as pulse compression codes for narrowband pulse signals and simulate the target detection performance of the system. We provide two MIMO radar systems using our proposed codes as orthogonal pulse compression codes to study the direction finding performance of the MIMO radar systems. We theoretically analyze the two MIMO radar system models and simulate the direction finding performance of the system. We also studied the RSN from the view of information theory. We investigate the use of information theory to design waveforms for the measurement of extended radar targets in RSN. We optimized the estimation waveforms that maximize the mutual information between a target ensemble and the received signal within additive Gaussian noise so that characteristics of the target could be well recognized. Finally, we provide and analyze a CS-SVD method to simplify the signal recovery algorithm and introduce CS to RSN using pulse compression technique. Our idea is to employ a set of Stepped-Frequency (SF) waveforms as pulse compression codes for transmit sensors, and to use the same SF waveforms as the sparse matrix to compress the signal in the receiving sensor. We obtain that the signal samples along the time domain could be largely compressed so that they could be perfectly recovered by a small number of measurements. We develop a Maximum Likelihood (ML) Algorithm for Radar Cross Section (RCS) parameter estimation and provide the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) to validate the theoretical result.

During the period of 12/1/2005--5/30/2006, we expanded our research from generic wireless sensor networks to radar sensor networks. For radar sensor networks, we performed the following preliminary studies: (1) Waveform design and diversity in radar sensor networks with applications to automatic target recognition with or without delay-doppler uncertainty; (2) We proposed a Knowledge-based Ubiquitous and Persistent Sensor (KUPS) network for threat assessment, of which "sensor" is a broad characterization concept; (3) Spatial-temporal-frequency diversity for RSN. For non-radar sensor networks, we conducted the following research: (1) Channel Capacity of Virtual MIMO-Based Wireless Sensor Networks with Imperfect CSI; (2) Cross-Layer Design for MIMO-Based Wireless Sensor Networks; (3) Statistical Analysis in Wireless Sensor Networks with Application to Resource Allocation; (4) MAC Protocol Design for UWB-Based Wireless Sensor Networks; (5) Query Processing Optimization in Wireless Sensor Networks. Fourteen papers were produced during the past six months, and are attached to this report.

This ONR award has significantly helped the PI and his research group to survive and develop. Major achievements include students training, technology transfer to DoD product, and research accomplishments. Eight Ph. D students and eight M.S. students have been supported by this ONR project. Of these 16 Ph. D/M.S. students, 4 Ph. D students and 4 M.S. students are women. In this ONR project, we have systematically studied radar sensor networks, which include sense-through-foliage target detection using FOPEN radar and radar sensor network, UWB radar for Sense-through-foliage channel modeling and foliage clutter modeling, waveform design and diversity in radar sensor networks, multi-target detection in radar sensor networks, UWB noise radar for sense-through-wall channel modeling, and compressive sensing for radar and radar sensor networks, etc. Sixty-five papers have been produced during this project and are attached to this final technical report. Our research results on Foliage Penetration (FOPEN) radar and radar sensor networks have been transferred to US Air Force for their laser imaging through clouds product. The algorithms from this ONR project could be integrated into existing Navy and Marine Corps' radar sensor systems such as Tactical Remote Sensor System (TRSS), Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS), Tier II Pioneer Unmanned Aerial System (UAS), Expeditionary Tactical Area Surveillance System (ETASS), Critical Area Protection System (CAPS), etc. The research will directly benefit DoD netcentricity based programs and concepts including Navy FORCEnet, Distributed Common Ground System (DCGS), Transparent Urban Structures (TUS) program, etc.

This dissertation research mainly concerns the design of novel signal processing and communications techniques for networks of complex sensors that focus on target detection and identification, such as radar sensors. Specifically, we investigate two problems, waveform design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar, and energy-efficient cross-layer design for signal detection in radar sensor networks.

An autonomous wireless sensor network consisting of different types of sensor modalities is a topic of intense research due to its versatility and portability. These types of autonomous sensor networks commonly include passive sensor nodes such as infrared, acoustic, seismic and magnetic. However, fusion of another active sensor such as Doppler radar in the integrated sensor network may offer powerful capabilities for many different sensing and classification tasks. In this work,we demonstrate the design and implementation of an autonomous wireless sensor network integrating a Doppler sensor into wireless sensor node with commercial off the shelf components. We also investigate the effect of different types of target materials on return radar signal as one of the applications of the newly designed radar-mote network.Usually type of materials can affect the amount of energy reflected back to the source of an electromagnetic wave.We obtain mathematical and simulation models for the reflectivity of different homogeneous non-conducting materials and study the effect of such reflectivity on different types of targets. We validate our simulation results on effect of reflectivity on different types of targets using real toy experiment data collected through our autonomous radar-mote sensor network.
