Excerpt from Radium and Radioactivity In this small volume an attempt has been made to deal with the most important facts of the science of Radioactivity in a manner simple enough to be understood by readers with a very elementary knowledge of Physics and Chemistry. The science is so intimately connected with these that no intelligent explanation can be given without assumption of a slight knowledge of general elementary science, and any attempt to impart this knowledge along with the treatment of the specific subject would not only result in a book far beyond the modest size of this volume, but is completely unnecessary in view of the many excellent treatises which already provide the desired information. Thickness which was on the bare photographic late. In this case the rays have penetrated the aluminum and the bone. Ime 120 hours: Experiment 11: Uranous oxid was placed in an aluminum box which was placed on a photographic plate covered with black paper and after 60 hours it produced a very deep print. Experiment 12: Uranous oxid was placed in an aluminum box, which was placed on the reverse side of a photographic plate, and after 72 hours it produced a very deep print. Excerpt from Radium and Radiotherapy: Radium, Thorium, and Other Radio-Active Elements in Medicine and Surgery The creation of this work has been prompted by the many solicitations of the author's friends and the inquiries of many others as to where it might be possible to obtain authoritative information upon the subject of radium and its scientific and medicinal properties. The reason for these queries is that if the medical literature of the day is carefully examined, it will be found that articles upon radio-activity in the English language are exceptional. This is in marked contrast with the literature of other languages, particularly German and French, in which the most active interest prevails. While this contrast is very apparent it is not altogether without foundation, for in this country it has been difficult to procure the radio-active materials. It is possible that the relation of our public institutions to their attendant physicians may be a factor; for wherever these valuable salts have been acquired, the investigator has been obliged, in almost every instance, to bear the expense. Another fact that has to some extent discouraged American investigation is that most of the radium brought to this country has been in the hands of private speculators; and in some instances, which have recently been brought to the attention of the profession, an exorbitant price was paid for an extremely poor quality of radium.
