Aquest llibre és un estudi de la figura de Rafael Calvo Serer i la seua influència en la revista Arbor, sobretot en un grup de persones que van col·laborar de manera estreta en aquesta revista i en altres empreses culturals durant el franquisme. En primer lloc, tracta d'exposar què escrivien, què pensaven, quina mentalitat tenien els components d'aquest equip d'acció cultural. A continuació, es mostra com el grup Arbor va créixer en nombre i presència en la vida cultural espanyola a la fi dels anys quaranta. Finalment, s'estudia l'entrada de Rafael Calvo en el consell privat de Don Joan de Borbó el 1952, la configuració d'un «sistema d'homes amb idees», que guanyava oposicions i premis, les crisis en la direcció de la revista Arbor abans i després de la publicació d'un article de Calvo en Écrits de Paris contrari a la política cultural de Ruiz-Giménez.

This book examines the role that science and culture held as instruments of nationalization policies during the first phase of the Franco regime in Spain. It considers the reciprocal relationship between political legitimacy and developments in science and culture, and explores the ‘nationalization’ efforts in Spain in the 1940s and 1950s, via the complex process of transmitting narratives of national identity, through ideas, representations and homogenizing practices. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the volume features insights into how scientific and cultural language and symbols were used to formulate national identity, through institutions, resource distribution and specific national policies. Split into five parts, the collection considers policies in the Francoist ‘New State’, the role of women in these debates, and perspectives on the nationalization and internationalization efforts that made use of scientific and cultural spheres. Chapters also feature insights into cinema, literature, cultural diplomacy, mathematics and technology in debates on Catalonia, the Nuclear Energy Board, the Spanish National Research Council, and how scientific tools in Spain in this era fed into wider geopolitics with America and onto the UNESCO stage.

La investigación saca a la luz la historia musical y de las instituciones musicales de Salamanca (Instituto Alemán de Cultura, Instituto Italiano de Cultura, Ayuntamiento de Salamanca, Diputación Provincial, Conservatorio Regional de Música, Orquesta Sinfónica de Salamanca y Sociedad Filarmónica de Salamanca) desde finales de la Guerra Civil, entre 1940 y 1960. Por otra parte, este estudio reconstruye el papel desempeñado por las élites en la revitalización de las instituciones musicales salmantinas. El trabajo determina la naturaleza y composición de esa minoría rectora que las lideró, a la vez que fue receptora de ellas, durante dos décadas. Además, se descubre la utilización de esta actividad como instrumento cultural de la élite salmantina, esto es, como uno de los mecanismos que se puede utilizar para distinguirse del conjunto de la sociedad y para reforzar su papel director. Por último, analiza la evolución estético-musical de los repertorios y audiciones que esta minoría recepcionó a lo largo de veinte años, lo que la sitúa a la altura de otras élites industriales y comerciales españolas. Se trata de un trabajo de carácter interdisciplinar en el que se han aplicado diferentes líneas de investigación: historia oral, prosopografía y asociacionismo voluntario, si bien la metodología principal empleada ha sido la historia oral.

En aquest llibre s'analitza la provisió de càtedres d'història en les facultats de filosofia i lletres en la postguerra, durant els anys 1940 a 1950. El primer any es convoquen els primers concursos i oposicions davant tribunals designats a l'arbitri del ministre falangista José Ibáñez Martín. Els vells catedràtics partidaris o adaptats al règim es traslladen a unes altres universitats, especialment a Madrid, mentre els auxiliars i altres doctors aconsegueixen càtedra. Els tribunals actuen amb una legalitat aparent, encara que expliquen més les vinculacions polítiques i acadèmiques, els mèrits «patriòtics», que la formació i els coneixements. Aviat el predomini de Falange es contraresta per altres famílies del règim, conservadors, catòlics propagandistes i de l'Opus Dei que s'enfronten en aquella universitat franquista, delmada i sotmesa a la ideologia nacionalcatòlica.
