Excerpt from The Cellulose-Water Interaction in Rag and Wood Pulps It has been theorized that during beating, lateral bonds between neighboring lamellae in the cell wall are broken allowing water to enter, enabling the lamellae to slide past one another and results in increased fiber flexibility (l). Evidence that some such process occurs is considered to be substantiated by the fact that during beating, pulp fibers become more flexible, collapse more easily, and disintegrate into sheet-like films or debris. Unfortunately, details of the process are lacking. There is great difficulty in examining the interior of the cellulose-water gel in the presence of water and in the ability to follow the structural changes during mechanical treatment. Outlining the early history of the U.S. paper industry, this book provides details on paper manufacturing from the early 1800s, when American paper was created almost entirely by hand out of cotton and other plant fibers, to the discovery of wood-pulp paper and the introduction of commercial-grade paper machines during the post-Civil War period. It discusses paper machine manufacturing, major U.S. mills, the papermaking traditions of Dutch and German immigrants, the politics of papermaking, and the eventual expansion of the paper industry from New England to the forests of the Northeast, Midwest, and Northwest. Two appendices provide a census listing of more than 1,100 U.S. paper mills, along with a directory of more than 1,300 mill owners and companies. The book contains around 70 illustrations and diagrams of major mills and relevant manufacturing technologies.

'Beautiful, like a muddy journey through time . . . a really important book' RAYNOR WINN, author of The Salt Path Lisa Woollett has spent her life combing beaches and mudlarking, collecting curious fragments of the past: from Roman tiles and Tudor thimbles, to Victorian buttons and plastic soldiers. In a series of walks from the Thames, out to the Kentish estuary and eventually to Cornwall, she traces the history of our rubbish and, through it, reveals the surprising story of our changing consumer culture. Timely and beautifully written, Rag and Bone shows what we can learn from what we've thrown away and urges us to think more about what we leave behind.

Rag Water written by Christopher Heffernan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-05-01 with Poetry categories.

Rag Water, by Christopher Heffernan, is a book of poetry highlighted by several pieces of flash fiction that help tell the story of our lonesome sometimes brutal path through our hopes and dreams to our loses and hard won triumphs. A book that uses at times a tough language to find the delicate balance between our everyday gutters and the further reaches of where we end as human beings and begin to see and even touch what is greater. The light of night shown through Bowery bars at three in the morning. The place where we try to find a frantic common ground in a love breaking apart in hands that only want to hold. Rag Water brings the reader to the edge of the self that most want to ignore, where we see out of the corners of the eye what is petty and selfish and lost, only to be set back on the heels of how beautiful the victory of a simple cup of coffee can be as we see that self square in the face and win it back one moment at at time.
