The loss of my mother was all I could think about as I sat on a limb in the cherry tree which towered over the hog lot. But when I woke up the next morning in my own bunk with the clean white sheets and my very own flashlight, surrounded by other boys my age, I knew I was in for an amazing life. We dressed and went down to breakfast and what a spread! It was made complete by eating in a large room with 35 other boys and girls and to top that off, we had peach preserves and homemade butter on hot biscuits. What a life for a five-year-old. We kids played long hours in the hills of Beattyville, KY. Christmas was packed with gifts and food given to us from Taylor Tire in Lexington. They took us to the Shrine Circus every year and gave us airplane rides, too. Man, what better life could a kid ask for? Except when I popped open the window of the plane and we thought we were going to be sucked out! Jack and Helen Brown knew something about running an orphanage. We raised much of our own food and animals and he owned a blacktopping company where we boys worked. Fearing for my life in boarding schools made me aware of my surroundings, and being expelled for throwing a dirt clot over a staff member’s head was no fun either. Finally a boarding school where I was appreciated and where I would meet the love of my life. Then on to Paris Island, NC to meet up with Uncle Sam! We hit it off from the start. Oh wait! That drill instructor that “leaped in my chest”; oh well, it only hurt till I could breathe again. Vietnam, Fire Department, Church, Royal Rangers, Retirement, Family; my three angels have always been there. You will meet them.

Indian English written by Jillian Haslam and has been published by New Generation Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11 with categories.

Indian. English. is Jillian Haslam's memoir of growing up an English girl in post-colonial India. Her harrowing yet ultimately redemptive story of living in the dark squalid by-lanes of Calcutta, abused and misunderstood by many, recalls the darkest moments of Angela's Ashes and the inner turmoil of The Glass Castle. For every atrocity described in Indian. English., however, there is found a parallel kindness - a sacrifice, really - on the part of the poorest of the poor, who helped her family to survive. One cannot overlook those small, seemingly insignificant and mundane acts of human kindness. Within these humble people thrive a grace beyond description that literally saves lives every hour of every day. Such was the case with Jillian and her family, which suffered through the death of children, abject starvation, trauma and humiliation. In vivid detail, the author recounts how she learned to look for the positives embedded in the numerous challenges encountered on her path; and how to overcome adversity to be successful. The rich story of her life, of finding the road to success, and how she utilizes her wisdom and vision to help others through her foundation, vividly illustrates how and why Jillian Haslam inspires everyone she meets.

A Telegraph Book of the Year A Guardian Book of the Year A Shindig Book of the Year A Virgin Radio Book of the Year Awarded the certificate of merit in the 2023 Association for Recorded Sound Collections Awards for Excellence In 1970, pop was in trouble. The Beatles were no more. Pink Floyd devoted themselves to progressive epics. Led Zeppelin dismissed anything beyond their 'musical statements' as childish frippery. Thankfully, help was on its way. This comprehensive chronicle by music historian Will Hodgkinson explores how an unlikely mix of backroom songwriters, revitalised rockers, actors, producers, teen stars and children turned pop into the dominant sound and vision of the 1970s. While bands such as the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac were ruling the albums chart, the singles chart was swinging along to the tune of million-selling blockbusters by the likes of Brotherhood of Man, the Sweet and the Wombles. These were the songs you heard on Radio 1, during Saturday-night TV, at youth clubs, down the pub and even emanating from your parents' record player... It was never cool, but it was the real soundtrack of the decade. Against a rainy, smog-filled backdrop of three-day weeks, national strikes, IRA bombings and the Winter of Discontent, this unrelenting stream of novelty songs, sentimental ballads, glam-rock stomps and blatant rip-offs offered escape, uplift, romance and the promise of eternal childhood - all released with one goal in mind: a smash hit. In Perfect Harmony takes the reader on a journey through the most colour-saturated era in music, examining the core themes and camp spectacle of '70s singalong pop, as well as its reverberations through British culture since. This is the pioneering social history of a musical revolution.

The rags-to-riches story of Silicon Valley's original disruptor. American Disruptor is the untold story of Leland Stanford – from his birth in a backwoods bar to the founding of the world-class university that became and remains the nucleus of Silicon Valley. The life of this robber baron, politician, and historic influencer is the astonishing tale of how one supremely ambitious man became this country's original "disruptor" – reshaping industry and engineering one of the greatest raids on the public treasury for America’s transcontinental railroad, all while living more opulently than maharajas, kings, and emperors. It is also the saga of how Stanford, once a serial failure, overcame all obstacles to become one of America’s most powerful and wealthiest men, using his high elective office to enrich himself before losing the one thing that mattered most to him—his only child and son. Scandal and intrigue would follow Stanford through his life, and even after his death, when his widow was murdered in a Honolulu hotel—a crime quickly covered up by the almost stillborn university she had saved. Richly detailed and deeply researched, American Disruptor restores Leland Stanford’s rightful place as a revolutionary force and architect of modern America.
