In this edition in the popular series, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy presents the best of the West. With 70 rural, suburban, and urban trails threading through 1,050 miles, Rail-Trails West covers 60 trails in California, eight in Arizona, and two in Nevada. Many rail-trails offer escapes from city life, like the Mount Lowe Railway Trail, high above the buzzing Los Angeles basin on a rail line vacationers once took to a mountaintop resort. Others offer the pure sensory thrill of sweeping terrain, like Arizona's 7-mile Prescott Peavine Trail. Still more juxtapose the natural world with the railroad's industrial past, like Nevada's Historic Railroad Hiking Trail, which passes through five massive tunnels to reach Hoover Dam. Every trip has a detailed map, directions to the trailhead, and information about parking, restroom facilities, and other amenities. Many of the level rail-trails are suitable for walking, jogging, bicycling, inline skating, wheelchairs, and horses.

Traveling California S El Camino Real By Bicycle written by Mary Choate and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-22 with categories.

The El Camino Real, sometimes called the California Mission Trail, is the historical road that stretched from Sonoma to San Diego to connect California's twenty-one Spanish Missions. The route is not well established; in fact quite the opposite. There may not ever have been a clear trail for much of the full distance, or several trails may have been in existence to connect the missions. Since the early days, the trail has been largely lost to development, and the 101 Freeway now follows where the path used to be for some of the route. Some signs remain, by way of old mission bells or models of mission bells marking where the path was known to have been, but these are few and far between. It thus remains up to the modern traveler to pick out their own path from mission to mission along whatever trails and roads are now available. The route will traverse a variety of landscapes, from inner city to rural countryside. A wide range of sightseeing opportunities, such as museums, wildlife refuges, and historic sites dot each stage. The whole ride is approximately 900 miles from start to finish, including a detour to visit Hearst Castle, and the miles for each day's ride range between 31 and 56. Over the twenty-one day journey, the route visits every Mission in the chain, as well as some of the best scenery and attractions that California has to offer.
