Raimer Jochims, einer der wichtigsten zeitgenössischen deutschen Maler, ist auch als Kunsttheoretiker hervorgetreten. Der herausfordernde innovative Ansatz seines Werkes stellt hohe Ansprüche an sich selbst und die Betrachtenden. In einem wahrnehmungstheoretischen Teil der Arbeit werden die Anschauungsbedingungen seiner Bilder untersucht, während in einem zweiten Teil Jochims' Entwicklung eines neuen Kunstbegriffs erläutert wird. Er stellt die Qualitätsfrage nicht mehr im Hinblick auf das Einzelwerk, sondern auf Gesamtkonzeption und Lebenshaltung der AutorInnen. Seine Thesen werden durch die Nähe zu Fiedler, Langer, Adorno und Heidegger in ihrer Bedeutung unterstrichen. Jochims' Absicht, über das Sehen als anschauliche Erkenntnis einen neuen ästhetischen Kanon zu formulieren, wird sowohl anhand seiner eigenen Werke als auch der Untersuchung einer Installation von John Cage erprobt, wobei sich zeigt, daß die von ihm dargelegten Kriterien nicht nur für die Erschließung seiner eigenen Bildwerke hilfreich sind, sondern im Dickicht schwer zugänglicher moderner Kunst wesentliche Anhaltspunkte der Betrachtung liefern.
