Akal Purkh, the solitary and eternal personality of the cosmos, watches and narrates as the Ages progress and the deities and angels grow concerned about the well-being of humanity. As they meditate, they send a powerful beam of energy to Earth that produces a water source that becomes a sacred place of healing. Akal Purkh asks a beloved rishi to create a special soul and place it in the body of a female who will consecrate the water by carrying the suffering of the Kali Yuga to it. To prepare the way, the Golden Chain of Truth is connected to the Earth and the soul's destiny. After the special soul is born, she is named Rajni and raised as a privileged and somewhat arrogant princess. But at age fourteen, Rajni's life changes when her father forces her to marry a handicapped leper and subsequently disowns her. Obligated to carry her husband on her back as she searches for the Guru of Miracles and the sacred water, Rajni embarks on a selfless and unforgettable journey where she makes an amazing discovery. In this moving epic drawn from myth, legend, and historical events, a young girl and her creator reveal the power of love, sacrifice, and the elevation of the soul as a miracle is unveiled.

This epic, sweeping historical novel full of "wondrous complexity” spans continents and a century, and reveals how one act of survival can reverberate through generations (Rachel Khong, author of Goodbye, Vitamin). “Remarkable….a haunting, symphonic tale” —New York Times Book Review In 1898, Pirbhai, a teenage boy looking for work, is taken from his village in India to labor for the British on the East African Railway. Far from home, Pirbhai commits a brutal act in the name of survival that will haunt him and his family for years to come. So begins Janika Oza’s masterful, richly told epic, where the embers of this desperate act are fanned into flame over four generations, four continents, throughout the twentieth century. Pirbhai’s children are born in Uganda during the waning days of British colonial rule, and as the country moves toward independence, his granddaughters, three sisters, come of age in a divided nation. Latika is an aspiring journalist, who will put everything on the line for what she believes in; Mayuri’s ambitions will take her farther away from home than she ever imagined; and fearless Kiya will have to carry the weight of her family’s silence and secrets. In 1972, the entire family is forced to flee under Idi Amin’s military dictatorship. Pirbhai’s grandchildren are now scattered across the world, struggling to find their way back to each other. One day a letter arrives with news that makes each generation question how far they are willing to go, and who they are willing to defy, to secure their own place in the world. A History of Burning is an unforgettable tour de force, an intimate family saga of complicity and resistance, about the stories we share, the ones that remain unspoken, and the eternal search for home. Includes a Reading Group Guide.

He used to wipe away the beads of perspiration, which covered her body right from her face to her feet, the result of the strong flood lights. Though she sat like a stone in those occasions, when his hands caressed her body, he could feel her quick in-take of breath betraying her aloofness. She used to shut her eyes on the pretext of avoiding the glare of lights whenever he was near but the slight quiver of her lips betrayed her. He toweled her dry, made adjustments in her pose more frequently than actually necessary. In the intervals he covered her body with a large soft absorbent robe and led her to a divan for comfort. Her proximity, the woman smell emanating from her, the softness of her body all filled him with intense desire. Frequently than not, the robe fell open to reveal her full body.

Haunting Bollywood written by Meheli Sen and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-01 with Performing Arts categories.

Haunting Bollywood is a pioneering, interdisciplinary inquiry into the supernatural in Hindi cinema that draws from literary criticism, postcolonial studies, queer theory, history, and cultural studies. Hindi commercial cinema has been invested in the supernatural since its earliest days, but only a small segment of these films have been adequately explored in scholarly work; this book addresses this gap by focusing on some of Hindi cinema’s least explored genres. From Gothic ghost films of the 1950s to snake films of the 1970s and 1980s to today’s globally influenced zombie and vampire films, Meheli Sen delves into what the supernatural is and the varied modalities through which it raises questions of film form, history, modernity, and gender in South Asian public cultures. Arguing that the supernatural is dispersed among multiple genres and constantly in conversation with global cinematic forms, she demonstrates that it is an especially malleable impulse that routinely pushes Hindi film into new formal and stylistic territories. Sen also argues that gender is a particularly accommodating stage on which the supernatural rehearses its most basic compulsions; thus, the interface between gender and genre provides an exceptionally productive lens into Hindi cinema’s negotiation of the modern and the global. Haunting Bollywood reveals that the supernatural’s unruly energies continually resist containment, even as they partake of and sometimes subvert Hindi cinema’s most enduring pleasures, from songs and stars to myth and melodrama.
