Die Aufgabe dieses Buches besteht in der Beschreibung der slowenischen Sprachzeugnisse aus der Periode zwischen den Freisinger Denkmälern (Brizinski spomeniki) und dem ersten gedruckten slowenischen Buch von Primoz Trubar (1550). Diese ganze Epoche wird traditionell als Handschriftenperiode bzw. handschriftliche Periode bezeichnet, obwohl es sich nicht nur um Handschriften, sondern auch um einzelne Glossen, Namen, slowenische Interpolationen in nicht slowenischen Texten und sogar um einige gedruckte Sätze aus dem J. 1515 handelt. Man müßte betonen, daß weder eine detaillierte verallgemeinernde Analyse der slowenischen handschriftlichen Sprachdenkmäler noch eine Beschreibung der sprachlich-geschichtlichen Entwicklung des Slowenischen der handschriftlichen Periode gemacht worden sind, obwohl dieses Thema oft in zahlreichen Diskussionen über die Kontinuität der slowenischen Sprach- und Literaturtradition besprochen wird. In mehreren philologischen Beiträgen merkt man eine eher skeptische Haltung in bezug auf die Rolle und auf das Niveau der Entwicklung der slowenischen Sprache während der Handschriftenperiode (Kidric), auch wenn eine solche Einstellung nicht selten kritisiert worden ist (I. Grafenauer). In der Monographie werden folgende Sprachdenkmäler dargestellt (in chronologischer Reihenfolge): ein Satz (ein Gruß) von Ulrich von Liechtenstein (1227) die Handschrift von Klagenfurt / Ratece (1362-1390) einige Sätze und Lexeme aus zwei Gedichten von Oswald von Wolken^stein (1416-1417) die Handschrift von Sticna (1428, 1440) die Handschrift von Kranj (ab 1440-?) die Handschrift von Udine (1458) die Handschrift von Skofja Loka (1466) die Handschrift von Stara Gora (1492-1498) die Handschrift von Cernjeja bzw. von Cividale bzw. Venezianisch-Slowenische Handschrift (ab 1497) die Handschrift von Auersperg (XV Jh.?) die sogenannte Slowenische Homilieskizze (Ende des XV. - Anfang des XVI. Jh.) Ain newes lied von den kraynerischen bauren (1515) ein mit der Hand geschriebener Satz von W. Praunsberger (1544) aus der Turnirska knjiga Gasperja Lambergerja. In der Einleitung wird die Auswahl der sich auf die Zeit zwischen den Freisinger Fragmenten und dem ersten Buch Trubars beschränkenden Periode für die wissenschaftliche Analyse begründet. Die Notwendigkeit, die Forschungen in dieser Richtung fortzusetzen, wird betont. Im ersten Kapitel (Geschichte der Erforschung der frühslowenischen Sprachdenkmäler) sind alle oben erwähnten Sprachdenkmäler kurz vorgestellt und charakterisiert. Außerdem werden Informationen über ihre Datierung und über den Platz, an dem sie sich zur Zeit befinden, gegeben. Im zweiten Kapitel (Frühslowenische Sprachdenkmäler. Texte und Kommentare) werden die folgenden Sprachzeugnisse behandelt: die Handschrift von Klagenfurt / Ratece, die Handschrift von Sticna, die Handschrift von Kranj, die Handschrift von Udine, die Handschrift von Stara Gora, die Handschrift von Skofja Loka, die Handschrift von Cernjeja, die Handschrift von Auersperg, die Homilieskizze mit ihren neuen Editionen. Bei jeder neuen Edition findet man einen apparatus criticus; danach folgen philologische und sprachwissenschaftliche Kommentare, Beschreibungen der Phonetik, Morphologie, Syntax und Lexik jedes einzelnen Textes. Im Schlußwort werden die wichtigsten Schlußfolgerungen der Arbeit formuliert und einige noch zu lösende Probleme in bezug auf die Geschichte der frühslowenischen Sprache erörtert. Am Ende des Bandes sind die Bibliographie, das Namen- und das Formenverzeichnis sowie Zusammenfassungen in niederländischer, slowenischer und italienischer Sprache enthalten.
