Optical control is fundamental to our project objective of demonstration of key quantum operations for quantum computation with spin qubits of electrons in semiconductor quantum dots. Sophia Economou, the graduate student supported by this fellowship, works on the design of optical control taking into account the deterioration of the quantum states of the electron spin and of the excited state during the optical control process. She has three major accomplishments: (1) She and collaborators predicted how spontaneously generated spin coherence by optical excitation affects the spin precession, which was experimentally confirmed. (2) She and collaborators constructed a unified theory of the quantum dynamics of any three level system under a wide range of control and measurement scenarios and under environmental influence, applicable to solid state and atomic systems. (3) She designed and simulated a simple sequence of three pulses to initialize, rotate and inverse-rotate an electron spin qubit.

The present book provides to the main ideas and techniques of the rapid progressing field of quantum information and quantum computation using isotope - mixed materials. It starts with an introduction to the isotope physics and then describes of the isotope - based quantum information and quantum computation. The ability to manipulate and control electron and/or nucleus spin in semiconductor devices provides a new route to expand the capabilities of inorganic semiconductor-based electronics and to design innovative devices with potential application in quantum computing. One of the major challenges towards these objectives is to develop semiconductor-based systems and architectures in which the spatial distribution of spins and their properties can be controlled. For instance, to eliminate electron spin decoherence resulting from hyperfine interaction due to nuclear spin background, isotopically controlled devices are needed (i.e., nuclear spin-depleted). In other emerging concepts, the control of the spatial distribution of isotopes with nuclear spins is a prerequisite to implement the quantum bits (or qbits). Therefore, stable semiconductor isotopes are important elements in the development of solid-state quantum information. There are not only different algorithms of quantum computation discussed but also the different models of quantum computers are presented. With numerous illustrations this small book is of great interest for undergraduate students taking courses in mesoscopic physics or nanoelectronics as well as quantum information, and academic and industrial researches working in this field.

The objective of this program has been to work towards development of spin based quantum dots for optically driven quantum information processing. Using a combination of ultrahigh resolution laser spectroscopy to study the physics of the dots and ultrafast laser technology to coherently control the spins, we made several advances. Our main achievements include working with a model system based on the exciton optical Bloch vector where we demonstrated the first solid state quantum logic device and made the first demonstration of quantum state tomography in a solid. We also were successful in taking the new quantum dot structures produced by our collaborator, Dan Gammon at NRL that contained one electron, and demonstrated optically induced and detected quantum spin coherence and coherent optical control of the spin state. Our high resolution measurements also provided a measurement of the spin relaxation rate. The funding level in this program was primarily to support one graduate student and purchase equipment. The remaining support for the work comes from ARO, NSA (formerly ARDA), AFOSR, NSF.
