Herding cattle from horseback has been a tradition in northern Mexico and the American West since the Spanish colonial era. The first mounted herders were the Mexican vaqueros, expert horsemen who developed the skills to work cattle in the brush country and deserts of the Southwestern borderlands. From them, Texas cowboys learned the trade, evolving their own unique culture that spread across the Southwest and Great Plains. The buckaroos of the Great Basin west of the Rockies trace their origin to the vaqueros, with influence along the way from the cowboys, though they, too, have ways and customs distinctly their own. In this book, three long-time students of the American West describe the history, working practices, and folk culture of vaqueros, cowboys, and buckaroos. They draw on historical records, contemporary interviews, and numerous photographs to show what makes each group of mounted herders distinctive in terms of working methods, gear, dress, customs, and speech. They also highlight the many common traits of all three groups. This comparative look at vaqueros, cowboys, and buckaroos brings the mythical image of the American cowboy into focus and detail and honors the regional and national variations. It will be an essential resource for anyone who would know or portray the cowboy—readers, writers, songwriters, and actors among them.

The Big Out There A Buckaroo Life In Words And Art written by Brenda Negri and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-30 with categories.

In mid-1970's Brenda M. Negri quit a job as a gallop girl for Thoroughbreds at Oregon's Portland Meadows Race Track and headed east, determined to follow livelong obsessive as a working buckaroo. It was a time where women rarely if ever, were found buckaroo full time for a living unless they were born into a ranching family, dating a cowboy, or married into it. Negri had no such entrée through kin or insider connection. Alone, driving hundreds of miles while sleeping alone at night, she brazenly knocked on ranch doors asking and begging for a buckaroo job as she wandered across two states. Given a chance on a cattle feedlot in Idaho, from there she went on to work for ranches in Nevada, Oregon, Idaho and California. She knew, met, worked for and with legendary cowmen and buckaroos and a colorful cast of characters, some of who could have stepped out of the paces of a John Ford Western script or a Damon Runyon novel. The Big Out There: A Buckaroo Life in Words and Art is a nostalgic, gritty, titillating collection of vignettes, tributes and memories of life based on Negri's experiences with the people, the places and the mystique of a working buckaroo life. Documenting years Negri worked horses, cattle and ranches from 1977-1989 and beyond, accompanied by her whimsical sketches, The Big Out There reverently pays homage to a tough yet romantic, almost otherworldly time and the legendary people in it during the final years of big cow outfits running on the deserts and mountains. It is a rare peek into a place and a time, where working Vaqueros and buckaroos with "a flip kind of wildness" worked and roamed over the ION Country (Idaho, Oregon, Nevada) and the Pacific Slope of California. Negri's first book from September 17, 2018, The Way of The Pack: Understanding and Living With Livestock Guardian Dogs, has sold hundreds of copies; her book has been seen in movies, You Tubes, several magazines, international writings, numerous photographs and included in four famous dog films.

A COWBOY AND THE LOVE OF HIS LIFE Herman Vowell grew up on an Oregon homestead dreaming of being a cowboy. He was barely 21 when he became buckaroo boss of the Pitchfork Ranch, one of the biggest spreads in the West. He felt his life was complete and then he met Betty Torrens, a city girl from California. They fell in love and married during the darkest days of World War II. They settled on a sprawling ranch in the heart of the Devils Garden and worked together calving a thousand head of cows, putting up meadow hay with horse-drawn equipment, chasing wild mustangs. When tragedy, and the outside world, encroached on their remote ranch, they stood side by side and fought to retain their vanishing way of life. Rick Steber, one of the Wests most popular authors, tells Herman and Betty's story with words that will capture your heart with their tenderness. BUCKAROO HEART is a true western classic, a story of love so powerful and pure and strong, it is everlasting.

Hell on high red wheels! Cotton Drennan had packed a good many smoky years into a short span of time. For him, death lurked in shadowy alleys, and he watched them carefully always. He owed his life to that care—and to a fast and accurate gun. The Broken Ring Ranch was the biggest on the range and getting bigger—with the help of a gun-heavy crew. And nobody but Cotton Drennan seemed to give a damn about the injustice of Broken Ring's big grab. Cotton had been through range wars before, but never with the odds quite so great against him—never with so few on his side.
