This 500 page book is a new telling of the history of the unincorporated community of Castro Valley, California. It narrates the story of the evolution of the town from a Spanish Mission grazing pasture to a large, suburban bedroom community. The history is told in equal measures by images, maps and text. This is the first history of the town that leverages the power of the modern internet, allowing the discovery of photographs, maps and stories previously hidden on musty academic library shelves or deep in county archives, as well as making it possible to find ancestors of old timers and tap into their family albums and lore. For the first time, extensive use was made of the old Alameda and Contra Costa County squatter, deed and mortgage records, defining exactly who purchased what land, when, and at what cost. Alameda County placed all of their maps going back to 1853 on line in 2016, this unmined treasure trove of historical data proved to be one of the key sources for the project. All of the official US government records for the rancho confirmation court cases pertaining to town namesake Guillermo Castro and his neighbors the Estudillos and Sotos in the 1850's are distilled into a chapter covering this sordid era in US history. The overarching ambition of the work is to describe in detail each stage in the towns development and to explain why each change occurred when it did. Growth spurts triggered by the gold rush, the diaspora fleeing the great San Francisco Earthquake in 1906 and the arrival of critical war workers during WWII are described in detail. Pioneers and key civic leaders are detailed in each stages of the community's development. One chapter illustrates the history of the many failed attempts to incorporate Castro Valley as a self-governing city. Surrounding communities are described where appropriate to provide context for the changes in Castro Valley. Several well accepted stories about Castro Valley turned out to be apocryphal, including an officially designated California Historical landmark. This book sets the record straight.

With its archetypal open plan and reverence of indoor-outdoor living, the Ranch house is at the very heart of the California dream. When we picture California Ranch houses—the low-slung, informal dwellings that engulfed suburbs after World War II—we are thinking of just one part of a phenomenon that has its roots in early-nineteenth-century ranchos, and which continues today in houses that are startling and up-to-the-minute. Examples of the type have been called ranchos, ranchers, and California ramblers. They have been styled Spanish, Japanese, and French; Monterey and International; Vernacular, Minimalist, and Modernist. From the 1797 Rancho Los Alamitos of Long Beach to such contemporary homes as the Miller Residence of Corte Madera, Ranch Houses unveils the great variety and the very finest examples of this multifaceted form. Including the work of such architectural luminaries as Cliff May, Richard Neutra, John Lautner, and Charles Moore, Ranch Houses is an essential resource for architects, home owners, and all those who aspire to the indoor/outdoor lifestyle that is the California Dream.

Architecture critic Hess and photographer Weintraub portray the ranch-style house and the definitive home of the American West. They show a range of styles from around the West over the past 150 years, revealing the evolution from the simple, functional architecture of the 19th century to the opulent, vivid style that is popular today. Beginning with a look at real ranches, they show the country estates of the Western wealthy, the homes of media cowboys, and contemporary suburban examples. The romantic and intriguing homes set in the idyllic landscapes of the great California ranches. The lure of the West has been strong in American history, representing the promise of beautiful, wild landscapes, broad vistas, clean air, and bright skies. Set on this magnificent land are the homes and their interiors—from the 150-year-old Rancho Camulos of Ramona fame to Jack London’s Beauty Ranch on the slopes of Sonoma Mountain to the working ranches of today. Ranches: Home on the Range in California presents an expression of a lifestyle steeped in self-sufficiency, love of the land, and unpretentiousness. Arising from the tradition of the Mexican land-grant ranchos and the spread of Spanish Catholic missions, the ranches of California have a long and multifaceted history, which is examined by author Marc Appleton, who himself can attest to the challenges and charms of ranch life. Located in dramatic landscapes of rolling hills, upon the sides of mountains, or in vast plains bordered by snow-capped mountains, the featured homes demonstrate archetypal types—from the Spanish-style hacienda form of historic Rancho Camulos, with its open porch and broad eaves, to the New England clapboard traditional, as seen in Jack London’s Beauty Ranch. At once a tribute to a historic form and a fading way of life, as well as a celebration of renewal, architectural beauty, and the romance of the West, this book offers the reader an immersive experience of living on the land.
