"A series which is a model of its kind" Edmund King Considers the clerical friends of Ermengarde of Brittany, showing how these men enabled Ermengarde to fulfil both her duty and her desire to live an intensely pious life. Explores the ways in which grief was represented in the Histoire de Guillaume le Maréchal. Two thirteenth-century Evesham forgeries demonstrate that early thirteenth-century people, even so-called experts at the papal chancery, seem to have been ignorant of the physical form taken by early papal bulls. Explores the world of the scribes who composed Exon Domesday, demonstrating their working methods as well as giving us further insights into the composition of Great Domesday, completed by 1088. Looks at the involvement of Bernard, abbot of Le Mont Saint-Michel, 1131-49, in the development of the abbey in peril of the sea. Examines how the introduction of musical notation into Normandy around the millennium made it possible for people to understand melodies without aid from a master. Offers insights into the career of Ranulf Flambard, the most "infamous tax collector" of the late eleventh century in England. Investigates the annals of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for the years 1062 to 1066, showing that they were written largely in retrospect after the events of 1066 had played out. Looks at the case for the evidence relating to the foundation of Kirkstead Abbey, Lincolnshire. Finally, presents evidence for spying and espionage in the Anglo-Norman World.

This book is the first detailed examination on a comparative basis of the economic and political relations between the bishops and their cathedral clergy in England during the century and a half after the Conquest. In particular, it is a study of the structure and historical development of the mensal endowments and the redistribution of wealth which led, in the course of time, to the establishment of the chapter as a largely independent body with substantial political power. A description of the constitutional importance of the mensa and its treatment in recent scholarly writing is followed by a discussion of property rights and liberties in the church and the role of the bishop in ecclesiastical and civil government. The core of the book consists of an analysis based on contemporary sources of the episcopal and capitular organisation in each of the ten monastic and seven secular sees.

Monarchy Magnates And Institutions In The Anglo Norman World written by C. Warren Hollister and has been published by Burns & Oates this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986-07 with History categories.

The study of Anglo-Norman history has been greatly enhanced in recent years by seeing the political context of the day not as a static feudal network, but as a changing pattern of personal and political allegiance, in which the careful control of reward and punishment by the monarch to ensure loyalty was of prime importance in ensuring the stability of the crown. Few historians have done more to show the working of this system than Warren Hollister. Monarchy, Magnates and Instututions in the Anglo-Norman World brings together a collection of his work pubished since 1968 and makes available a coherent and clear view of the major features of the period. Professor Hollister shows how the threat of civil war after the death of William the Conqueror dominated political loyalties until the battle of Tinchebray (1106), and the skill of Henry I in ensuring the support of the magnates both before and after the defeat of Roberrt of Normandy; the careers of three magnates, Robert Malet, William of Warrene and William de Mandeville are traced to demonstrate the dependence of the fortunes of such men and their families on the maintenance of good relations with the king. The author goes on to examine the beginnings of institutional government: the early history of the English treasury; the separation of the magnates from the curiales, those with administrative functions at court; and the importance of the career of Roger of Salisbury. Monarchy, Magnates and Institutions also includes a view of the argument over the effects of the Conquest on feudalism, and an assessment of the nature of the Angevin empire and the viability of the Anglo-Norman state. Finally Professor Hollister provides the clearest and most definite answer possible in terms of the available evidence to the speculations - including murder and magic - about the death of William Rufus in 1100.
