My doctoral research involves the advanced numerical simulation of rarefied (low-pressure) planetary atmospheres and volcanism with advanced physical modeling, in application of the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. This method is the approach of choice for modeling a wide range of continuum-to-rarefied systems - in which the average spacing between molecules in the flow becomes comparable to the flow length scales, and in which traditional means of computing fluid dynamics with the partial differential equations of continuum theory break down. DSMC is a probabilistic technique by which the motions and collisions of representative molecules are computed. Multiple gas species are modelled, along with non-equilibrium radiation, high speed collisions, photochemistry, and a wide range of other relevant physics. Comprehensive atmospheric simulations are computed in parallel on one- and three-dimensional domains that, depending on the scope of a particular project, can span entire atmospheric systems from planetary surface through vacuum. These projects are ongoing efforts in modeling and understanding global-scale atmospheric flows and the processes by which such flows are populated and propagated, and they represent advancements of the state-of-the-art in planetary atmospheric simulation. I have produced and presented research on four distinct topics: 1) simulations of the complete atmosphere of Jupiter's volcanic moon Io including sublimation and plasma-sputtering processes; 2) the creation of a novel neutral density model for Earth's upper-atmosphere in partnership with Los Alamos' ISR division; 3) multi-species simulations of the rarefied gas dynamic, transfer, and escape processes of the Pluto-Charon system; and 4) investigations of the canopy unsteadiness and development of transient filamentary structure as observed by the New Horizons probe at the Ionian Tvashtar plume site. In the course of these projects, and using my research group's existing planetary-science DSMC code as a foundation, I have developed a novel, generalized framework for rarefied atmospheric simulation that enables efficient and thorough construction of entire upper-atmospheric models. My dissertation offers an analysis of the methodology of rarefied gas dynamic planetary atmospheric simulation, in addition to discussion of each project's scientific context, the results of my simulations, and their relevance toward the explanation of various observed phenomena in planetary atmospheric science.

This book reviews the approach to the kinetic simulation of nonequilib rium processes in the planetary atmospheres which the authors developed and dealt with since the 1970s. The results of this study, which are focused on the nonequilibrium collisional processes in the atmospheres of planets and comets, are thoroughly reviewed and discussed. Many specific problems of atmospheric modeling, involving numerical evaluation of aeronomic pro cesses, are addressed and compared with the available experimental data. The kinetic approach proved to be especially effective to model the in teraction of the incident shortwave solar radiation with the rarefied gas of planetary upper atmospheres. It involves various processes of photolysis, en ergetic electron impacts, and accompanying numerous chemical reactions, as well as processes occurring in the intermediate ("transition") zones of planetary and cometary gas envelopes. The underlying mathematical treat ment is based on the stochastic approach for the solution of the Boltzmann type equation and implies the development of the efficient algorithms for its computer simulation. Some results of this study were previously summa rized in the monograph issued in Russian (Marov et al. , 1990) and later in the review paper published in Space Science Reviews (Marov et al. , 1996). The basic principles of stochastic simulation were first developed in the field of rarefied gas dynamics and were successfully applied to the solution of some engineering problems of aerodynamics and heat transfer.

The Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method typically used to model thermochemical nonequilibrium rarefied gases requires accurate total collision cross sections, reaction probabilities, and molecular internal energy exchange models. However, the baseline total cross sections are often determined from extrapolations of relatively low-temperature viscosity data, reaction probabilities are defined such that experimentally determined equilibrium reaction rates are replicated, and internal energy relaxation models are phenomenological in nature. Therefore, these models have questionable validity in modeling strongly nonequilibrium gases with temperatures greater than those possible in experimental test facilities. To rectify this deficiency, the Molecular Dynamics/Quasi-Classical Trajectories (MD/QCT) method can be used to accurately compute total collision cross sections, reaction probabilities, and internal energy exchange models based on first principles for hypervelocity collision conditions. In this thesis, MD/QCT-based models were used to improve simulations of two unique nonequilibrium rarefied gas systems: the Ionian atmosphere and hypersonic shocks in Earth's atmosphere. The Jovian plasma torus flows over Io at [almost equal to] 57 km/s, inducing high-speed collisions between atmospheric SO2 and the hypervelocity plasma's O atoms and ions. The DSMC method is well-suited to model the rarefied atmosphere, so MD/QCT studies are therefore conducted to improve DSMC collision models of the critical SO2-O collision pair. The MD/QCT trajectory simulations employed a new potential energy surface that was developed using a ReaxFF fit to a set of ab initio calculations. Compared to the MD/QCT results, the baseline DSMC models are found to significantly underpredict total cross sections, use reaction probabilities that are unrealistically high, and give unphysical internal energies above the dissociation energy for non-reacting inelastic collisions and under-predicts post-dissociation SO internal energy. Implemented into DSMC, the MD/QCT-based models had a significant effect on simulations of simple, thermal nonequilibrium heat bath and 2D counterflow cases approximating the upper atmospheric conditions of Io. In high-fidelity 1D simulations of the atmosphere of Io, the MD/QCT models predicted approximately half the SO2 atmospheric dissociation due to O and O+ bombardment and a temperature rise due to plasma heating further from the Ionian surface than the existing baseline methodologies. Hypersonic spacecraft re-entering Earth's atmosphere experience significant heating from the post-shock gas. The DSMC method is used to model hypersonic shocks during the early stages of re-entry because of the rarefied nature of the atmosphere at high altitudes. Improved modeling of the N-N2 and N2-N2 collision pairs are thus generated with MD/QCT. For the N-N2 pair, a potential energy surface developed at NASA Ames is used and, for the N2-N2 pair, a new potential energy surface is developed using a ReaxFF fit to recent advanced ab initio computations. The MD/QCT-computed total cross sections agreed well with the baseline models, but the MD/QCT reaction probabilities exhibited better physical behavior, a stronger dependence on initial molecular internal energy, and were generally lower than the baseline DSMC chemistry models for strong nonequilibrium conditions, but higher for equilibrium conditions. Furthermore, the MD/QCT results predicted faster rotational-translational energy relaxation for the N-N2 pair and faster vibrational-translational energy relaxation for the N2-N2 pair. The MD/QCT models were tested in DSMC simulations of 2D axisymmetric hypersonic flow over a blunt body and thermal nonequilibrium heat bath cases. The MD/QCT models led to increased post-shock N2 dissociation and faster rates of internal energy relaxation, each of which led to corresponding decreases in translational temperature.
