Rostros sin Rastros: televisión, memoria e identidad da cuenta de un trabajo que vincula la investigación social y la gestión archivística de Rostros y Rastros, programa documental de mayor duración en la historia de la televisión colombiana, producido por Universidad del Valle Televisión (UV-TV) y transmitido por Telepacífico de 1988 a 2000. Se trata de una iniciativa que ha generando condiciones para librar de la desaparición (material, pero también simbólica) a un archivo audiovisual que, como el de Rostros y Rastros, está conservado en cintas de video obsoletas que al cabo de 10 a 15 años presentan un estado acelerado de degradación. Este libro recoge la descripción de las gestiones emprendidas a favor de este archivo: inventario, catalogación, digitalización, restauración y análisis. En cuanto a esta última, la publicación ofrece una revisión del contexto histórico-cultural en que se produjo Rostros y Rastros, destacando las condiciones políticas, culturales, económicas y tecnológicas que permitieron el surgimiento, la permanencia y la salida del aire de este programa. Rostros y Rastros es tal vez el más grande acervo 'etnográfico' audiovisual del que dispone la región: 353 piezas audiovisuales que muestran, casi siempre desde la perspectiva de la gente común, parte de nuestro pasado colectivo como región, de las diversas culturas que la componen, de nuestro patrimonio arquitectónico y natural, de la vida cotidiana de las clases populares (sobre todo urbanas), del "arte y la cultura, tanto la culta como la popular y la masiva (...): escritores, pintores, fotógrafos, músicos, orquestas, periodistas, intelectuales, toreros, artesanos, cuenteros, carnavales, festivales, celebraciones, entretenimientos, paseos, eventos deportivos, brujerías, encantamientos, romerías..." (ARBELÁEZ, 2003:15). Rostros y Rastros representa el periodo de mayor volumen de producción audiovisual y, tal vez, de mayores desarrollos temáticos y narrativos del género documental en la región. Rostros y Rastros visibilizó realidades y perspectivas negadas por los medios de comunicación o presentadas como monstruosas en la página roja o como exóticas en magazines y noticieros. Muchos de los lugares y de las gentes retratadas ya han desaparecido. ¿Lo harán también sus retratos, sus rostros y sus rastros?

Este libro se ocupa de prácticas artísticas realizadas en territorios del conflicto armado en Colombia. Este contacto con el territorio transformó la manera de asumir la relación entre arte y violencia, una relación permanente en la historia del arte colombiano desde la década del 40. En este cambio de relación, la dimensión del duelo y la metáfora del cementerio resultan centrales: más que la denuncia, la concientización o la sensibilización del público, el arte busca saldar las deudas simbólicas con los muertos y los desaparecidos. Por otro lado, estas prácticas han construido dispositivos de activación del habla que cumplen un papel importante en la construcción de memoria histórica. Esta investigación asume una posición: reconocer el potencial simbólico del arte para exteriorizar los “dolores heredados”, una forma de contrarrestar la repetición de la violencia en forma de venganza (“los odios heredados”). En ese sentido, el dolor no se asume de manera pasiva sino a partir de su potencial: el que se articula comunitariamente y crea vínculos de solidaridad, tanto afectivos como políticos.

At the beginning of World War II, the United States and Mexico launched the bracero program, a series of labor agreements that brought Mexican men to work temporarily in U.S. agricultural fields. In Braceros, Deborah Cohen asks why these migrants provoked so much concern and anxiety in the United States and what the Mexican government expected to gain in participating in the program. Cohen creatively links the often-unconnected themes of exploitation, development, the rise of consumer cultures, and gendered class and race formation to show why those with connections beyond the nation have historically provoked suspicion, anxiety, and retaliatory political policies.

Background Noise introduces to the English-speaking world the poetry of Argentinian writer Saul Yurkievich, in a bilingual edition. His poetry is a play of language and ideas, with language leading the way. His longer poems are collages, full of similarities and contrasts that remain unresolved, not circumscribed by a determination to harmonize or integrate. Also important to Yurkievich are sound and rhythm. His poems are like jazz solos, spontaneously flowing in response to nothing but themselves. And therefore they are great joys to read aloud. But beneath the pleasures of Yurkievich's riffs, there is a troubling despair. There is a sense in the poems of our inability to know, to find, to get what we desire. Writing in the tradition of Huidobro, Vallejo, and the early Neruda, Yurkievich's work both celebrates and laments the world's pandemonium. The title poem begins, "tenebrous turbid turmoil turbulence," an incantation of chaos. Also included in this volume is an interview with Yurkievich and his friend, the late fiction writer Julio Cortazar, about their approaches to writing. Book jacket.
