Managers in organisations must make rational decisions. Rational decision making is the opposite of intuitive decision making. It is a strict procedure utilising objective knowledge and logic. It involves identifying the problem to solve, gathering facts, identifying options and outcomes, analysing them, considering all the relationships and selecting the decision. Rational decision making requires support: methods and software tools. The identification of the problem to solve needs methods that would measure and evaluate the current situation. Identification and evaluation of options and analysis of the available possibilities involves analysis and optimisation methods. Incorporating intuition into rational decision making needs adequate methods that would translate ideas or observed behaviours into hard data. Communication, observation and opinions recording is hardly possible today without adequate software. Information and data that form the input, intermediate variables and the output must be stored, managed and made accessible in a user-friendly manner. "Groupthink, a form of defective decision-making, was identified by Irving Janis. The theory states in times of crisis, groups may value unit harmony over rational decision-making causing poor decision-making outcomes that lead to disaster. Groupthink was the subject of a number of research studies in the 1980s and 1990s, trying to duplicate the outcomes of the theory in laboratory research. While no such laboratory study has replicated Janis' work, scholarly case studies have found the phenomenon in real life settings. This thesis examines how groupthink influences higher education decision-making in a time when post-secondary institutions are navigating substantial amounts of change. A Groupthink Survey was administered to university faculty and staff who were involved in the decision-making process of overseeing a campus wide survey. The Groupthink Survey was used to explore the impact of culture on groupthink and which elements are present in higher education decision-making. The results of the Groupthink Survey found groupthink was not present during the time of the development and administration of the campus wide survey; however, another form of defective decision-making did occur. The committee who oversaw the university wide survey was plagued by closed leadership, an authoritarian use of power. This closed leadership mimicked conditions found in groupthink, but did not present enough evidence to conclude that groupthink did occurred. It was concluded that culture plays a role in how the university committee reacted to closed leadership, and ultimately the outcomes of the decisions made."--leaf 3.
