The Demography Of Corporations And Industries written by Glenn R. Carroll and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-05 with Business & Economics categories.

Most analysts of corporations and industries adopt the focal perspective of a single prototypical organization. Many analysts also study corporations primarily in terms of their internal organizational structures or as complex systems of financial contracts. Glenn Carroll and Michael Hannan bring fresh insight to our understanding of corporations and the industries they comprise by looking beyond prototypical structures to focus on the range and diversity of organizations in their social and economic setting. The result is a rich rendering of analysis that portrays whole populations and communities of corporations. The Demography of Corporations and Industries is the first book to present the demographic approach to organizational studies in its entirety. It examines the theory, models, methods, and data used in corporate demographic research. Carroll and Hannan explore the processes by which corporate populations change over time, including organizational founding, growth, decline, structural transformation, and mortality. They review and synthesize the major theoretical mechanisms of corporate demography, ranging from aging and size dependence to population segregation and density dependence. The book also explores some selected implications of corporate demography for public policy, including employment and regulation. In this path-breaking book, Carroll and Hannan demonstrate why demographic research on corporations is important; describe how to conduct demographic research; specify fruitful areas of future research; and suggest how the demographic perspective can enrich the public discussion of issues surrounding the corporation in our constantly evolving industrial society. All researchers and analysts with an interest in this topic will find The Demography of Corporations and Industries an invaluable resource.

Over the past hundred years changes in the structure of modern society have created an increasing asymmetry between individual persons and the corporate bodies with which they daily interact. The rise of the e new 'corporate actors"-government, business corporations, trade unions, associations-and our coexistence with them as natural persons pose problems never before confronted. James Coleman explores the implication of our modern asymmetric society for decision involving rights and risks, child rearing and the flow of information. He examines how corporate actors come to gain their right from natural persons; how they come to have life breathed into them; how their actions have serious economic and physical consequences for natural persons; and how reallocation of rights can be used to restrain their action . Coleman concludes hi provocative essays with a look into the future. The modern corporate actor allow natural per on freedom unknown to our forefather but has also placed many of us in impersonal, often inhuman bureaucracies. Is the corporate actor the la t such social invention? Or i there the possibility of a more attractive future, following still further social and corporate evolution?

Class Counts Student Edition written by Erik Olin Wright and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-07-06 with Political Science categories.

This textbook provides students with a lively and penetrating exploration of the concept of class and its relevance for understanding a wide range of issues in contemporary society. Erik Olin Wright treats class as a common explanatory factor and examines three broad themes: class structure, class and gender, and class consciousness. Specific empirical studies include such diverse topics as class variations in the gender division of labour in housework; friendship networks across class boundaries; the American class structure since 1960; and cross-national variations in class consciousness. The author evaluates these studies in the light of expectations within the Marxist tradition of class analysis. This Student Edition of Class Counts thus combines Wright s sophisticated account of central and enduring questions in social theory with practical analyses of detailed social problems.
