«Premesso che non sono razzista...» Quante volte abbiamo sentito pronunciare questa frase al bar, sull'autobus, nei talk show televisivi. Gente comune, politici, giornalisti: sono in molti a ritenere che sia sufficiente definirsi «non razzisti» per affrontare con obiettività qualsiasi discorso sulle diseguaglianze razziali e sociali, le discriminazioni, le pari opportunità, le identità di genere. Come se definirsi «non razzisti» fosse una garanzia di neutralità. Ma, secondo Ibram X. Kendi, fondatore e direttore dell'Antiracist Research and Policy Center presso la Boston University, «nella lotta contro il razzismo non esiste neutralità» e «non essere razzisti» non basta. È necessario essere «antirazzisti». È necessario cioè smascherare i presupposti del discorso razzista, sradicarne la logica deformata secondo cui esistono gerarchie fondate su qualità biologiche o su particolari caratteristiche etniche e culturali. È necessario individuare le politiche che vi si ispirano, le pratiche del potere che lo attualizzano, le mistificazioni di cui si nutre. E per farlo serve un linguaggio nuovo, preciso, coerente, in grado di definire il razzismo e di descriverlo in ognuna delle sue molteplici forme. Un linguaggio che l'autore ha messo a fuoco in questo libro appassionato e coraggioso. Kendi, però, non si limita a mettere a nudo le nostre idee razziste. Piuttosto riflette sul proprio percorso intellettuale, sul difficile cammino che dal razzismo anti-neri di quando era ragazzo nel Queens degli anni Novanta lo ha portato al razzismo anti-bianchi di quando era studente al college, per approdare infine all'antirazzismo consapevole della maturità. Un viaggio nella propria storia che è anche un viaggio nella storia di un intero paese, nel corpo della nazione americana. Combinando etica, storia, legge, scienza e ricordi personali, Kendi ci aiuta a riconoscere, fuori da ogni ambiguità o infingimento, la presenza concreta e tangibile del pregiudizio razziale nel mondo contemporaneo e a contrastarlo nel nostro sistema e in noi stessi. Per compiere finalmente il passo successivo: scoprirci antirazzisti e contribuire alla formazione di una società giusta ed equa.
