Re-Presenting the Johannine Community: A Postcolonial Perspective explores the characterization of the Johannine community in the Farewell Discourse of the Fourth Gospel from a postcolonial perspective. The community is scrutinized with the lens of an integrated literary-rhetorical and ideological-postcolonial approach. The disciples emerge as both the «Self», insofar as they resist an imperial reality represented by the «world», and the «Other», with respect to Jesus and the Father. Text, Context and the Johannine Community adopts a new approach to the social context of the Johannine writings by drawing on modern sociolinguistic theory. Sociolinguistics emphasizes language as a social phenomenon, which can be analysed with reference not only to its broad context of culture, but also, through the use of register analysis, to its narrower context of situation. The Johannine writings have increasingly been seen as the product of a distinct Johannine Community, depicted by some scholars as a sectarian group, opposed both to wider Jewish society and to other Christian groups. This model has largely been constructed on historical-critical grounds, yet given our lack of reliable external information about the origin of the Johannine writings, a more fruitful approach may be to examine their lexico-grammatical and discourse features to determine what these imply about interpersonal relationships. This study compares selected 'narrative asides' from the Gospel of John with a passage section from 1 John and with the two shorter Johannine Epistles. It concludes that register analysis of these texts does not support the idea of a close-knit sectarian group.

This dissertation integrates four key concepts in the development of a covenantal paradigm of mission: covenant relationship, the mission of God, re-presentation and paradigm shift. An examination of God's mission through the covenant motif provides the theological lens of the research. The concept of re-presentation undergirds the hermeneutical process and the concept of paradigm shift establishes the issue behind the study. The research involved two primary components: the Gospel of John and the Nikao faith community of Los Angeles. The dissertation addresses how a covenantal paradigm of mission might contribute to our participation in God's mission in the changing world of the twenty-first century as represented by Los Angeles. The study addresses issues of biblical theology and mission, paradigm shift and continuity versus discontinuity. The study begins by highlighting the need for a covenantal paradigm of mission. The small amount of literature addressing the link of the covenant motif with the mission of God calls for further theological and biblical studies along these lines. Chapter 3 presents literature in the field of mission theology and biblical studies that provide a foundation for such an endeavor. The research as a whole seeks to discover the re-presentation of God's action and presence in human history through the use of horizon hermeneutics. The research on John's Gospel employs a thematic thread methodology to discover the Johannine horizon. The case study of the Nikao faith community uses a grounded theory approach to discover how the community understood what it meant to live as God's people. The dissertation interprets the findings from the research on John and from the case study in terms of how the story of the Nikao faith community might re-present the Johannine story. The dissertation then formulates the findings of the biblical study and case study toward the construction of a covenantal paradigm of mission. The study concludes by presenting a theological and epistemological center that informs a relevant missional process for twenty-first century Los Angeles. The final chapter addresses the implications of a covenantal paradigm for Los Angeles and presents recommendations for engaging in covenantal participation with God.

Reconsidering Johannine Christianity presents a full-scale application of social identity approach to the Johannine writings. This book reconsiders a widely held scholarly assumption that the writings commonly taken to represent Johannine Christianity – the Gospel of John and the First, Second and Third Epistles of John – reflect the situation of an introverted early Christian group. It claims that dualistic polarities appearing in these texts should be taken as attempts to construct a secure social identity, not as evidence of social isolation. While some scholars (most notably, Richard Bauckham) have argued that the New Testament gospels were not addressed to specific early Christian communities but to all Christians, this book proposes that we should take different branches of early Christianity, not as localized and closed groups, but as imagined communities that envision distinct early Christian identities. It also reassesses the scholarly consensus according to which the Johannine Epistles presuppose and build upon the finished version of the Fourth Gospel and argues that the Johannine tradition, already in its initial stages, was diverse.

Christology with a planetary vision, blurring the boundaries and breaking the rhetoric of polarities of domination and exclusion, is the need of the hour. It is only by taking seriously these two dimensions (intercultural and subaltern) that christological articulations can be made intelligible, understandable, and relevant. Intercultural Christology in John's Gospel unravels the intercultural intersections and subaltern dimensions of John's Christology. John's Christology, crossing the boundaries of traditional Messianic categories of Judaism, even while echoing those traditions in an intercultural milieu, and creating a hybrid space of "inter" by blurring the categories of "above" and "below," gives an impetus for developing such new expressions in any given subaltern context. Christological articulation in John has a multidimensional orientation: toward God, world, and life. Therefore, John's Christology could be termed a Christology with a planetary vision. John's Gospel articulates its Christology through an intercultural route from a subaltern negotiating space. The Johannine Messiah is a subaltern Messiah, and the Johannine community is a subaltern community. The evangelist is not the one who collaborated with the colonizers. Therefore, the text cannot be treated as a colonial document, as some of the postcolonial readers do. Rather the evangelist resists and disrupts, even while resonating with the surrounding linguistic and conceptual milieu. Therefore, a hermeneutical framework of intercultural resonance and subaltern subversive rhetoric is a key to unlock the Gospel. Such a hermeneutical approach is a viable option in any subaltern context.
