Conference Agenda Appendix 2. Introduction of the Contributors What Is New about Reading the Bible with New Eyes? Introduction Reading the Bible is essential to the lives of Christians and the shaping of their identity. Regardless of the many differences among Christian denominations and theological trends, the Bible is commonly considered by Christians as the Word of God and is the most important way to acquaint the will of God. This is even more true to Christians with a Confucian background taught to respect the classics and teachings. Nevertheless, reading the Bible has never been neutral. It involves hermeneutic controversies of different theological trends and is subjected to the ideological positions and interests of its interpreters and readers. Traditional anthropocentric, androcentric and white-oriented interpretations of the Bible have not only misled the perception of biblical truth, but also created many oppressive frames, such as discrimination and persecution, which cause suffering. How to read the Bible and read it properly is thus crucial and imperative. Reading the Bible with New Eyes is an ecumenical theological endeavor and an attempt to help churches and individual Christians in their struggle for making the Bible a liberating message of the Christian God, who was revealed through the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The concept of “New Eyes” thus is a critical view through which to examine the existing interpretations of the Bible, addressing, in particular, those who interpret the Bible, whether intentionally or non-intentionally, with dominant and privileged perspectives or for the purpose of maintaining the status quo. For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt. (Deut. 10:17-19) But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus. (Eph. 2:4-6) The newness of the new eyes therefore is essentially seeking to be authentic and original. God’s Words need to be interpreted in God’s nature and intention. Theological confession to perceive the nature and intention of God thus is prior to the literary meaning of the biblical texts. The current publication of What Is New about Reading the Bible with New Eyes? is an outcome of an international theological consultation jointly held in December 2019 by the following organizations: The Evangelism Committee of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, Tainan Theological College and Seminary, Tainan Theological College Foundation, Taiwan Church Press, Grace Foundation, the Asian Theological Academy, and the Academy for Contextual Theologies in Taiwan. This consultation was, on the one hand, to respond to the ecumenical theological efforts to transform theological reflections from traditional Western domination, and, on the other hand, to enhance a two-decade-long mission program of Reading the Bible with New Eyes of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan by a theological revisit to the characteristic of newness in Taiwan’s contexts. The content of this book is divided into three parts with an appendix; the first part focuses on theological discourse on biblical hermeneutics and the role of contextuality; the second part is reflections from the contexts of Taiwan; the third part provides biblical illustrations; finally, for the sake of memory, we put a brief introduction of the contributors and program schedule of the consultation in the appendix. For this book to be published, I have to acknowledge and give my thanks to all the contributors and the joint hosts of the consultation for their cooperation and solidarity, and the editorial board members, particularly Jomei Tsai, who has devoted much energy and time to proofread the whole book. The publishing sector of Taiwan Church Press who helped with cover design and all the publishing work is also greatly appreciated. By Rev. Dr. Huang Po Ho Director Academy for Contextual Theologies in Taiwan May 20, 2020

Don’t keep asking God for forgiveness. Do judge one another. And you’re not going to heaven for all eternity! How have we misunderstood the teachings of Jesus? Often His message to the leaders and disciples was: You’re getting this wrong! Somewhere along the way you got confused, lost, way off track. Would He have the same assessment of us today? In Reading the Bible, Missing the Gospel, pastor and author Ben Connelly shows us how to recover God’s original intentions in light of the story of redemption. Connelly helps us celebrate and understand how Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection are truly good news for the tangible situations in our everyday lives. Biblical misunderstandings can lead to a small view of God—but truth overturns that. It expands our hearts for God and enables us to truly love others! Using theology, humor, and practical examples the author reveals shockingly common ways we get the Bible wrong. Connelly invites Christians to see themes and teachings with new eyes—or, rather, with old eyes—on topics like confession and forgiveness . . . what it means to be blessed or happy . . . whether we’re commanded to or prohibited from passing judgement. How does the gospel inform our understanding and answer these questions? Connelly gives readers a new gospel-focused lens that addresses common frustrations and helps them see with renewed hope, clarity, and courage.

The Bible reveals glorious things. And yet we often miss its power because we read it the same way we read any other book. In Reading the Bible Supernaturally, best-selling author John Piper teaches us how to read the Bible in light of its divine author. In doing so, he highlights the Bible's unique ability to reveal God to humanity in a way that informs our minds, transforms our hearts, and ignites our love. With insights into the biblical text drawn from decades of experience studying, preaching, and teaching Scripture, Piper helps us experience the transformative power of God's Word—a power that extends beyond the mere words on the page. Ultimately, Piper shows us that in the seemingly ordinary act of reading the Bible, something supernatural happens: we encounter the living God.

They Never Told Me This In Church written by Greg S. Deuble and has been published by Restoration Fellowship this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Religion categories.

There is a consensus among many New Testament scholars that much of what the historical Jesus and his apostles taught has been submerged by an influx of post-biblical tradition. Subtle foreign influences, mostly from pagan Greek philosophy, which neither Jesus nor his first-century followers would recognize or endorse, have obscured the original Gospel as Jesus preached it. Most churchgoers accept without question, unbiblical traditions which they have never seriously investigated. In They Never Told Me This in Church! Greg Deuble invites the reader to a careful re-examination of ?the faith once delivered? in the light of the Hebrew heritage which formed the framework of all that Jesus taught in regard to himself and his Gospel mission. From the Foreword: ?This does not mean at all that Greg has given up faith in holy Scripture. Far from it. There is nothing trendy or gimmicky in his approach. Rather, he has learned to read the Bible from its own Hebrew perspective, and shedding a large quantity of traditional baggage has made the Bible all the more brilliant and telling. Because he is an honest student of truth, Greg has been rewarded...with unusual insight. He has a knack of getting to the heart of the issues. He has brought in a wealth of modern scholarly support for his argument, and the quotations gleaned from his wide reading are impressive. He adds a pleasing dose of Aussie humour to his writing while he invites us to re-examine all the major issues of biblical theology. The personal warmth of the author and his pastoral touch are evident in all he writes.?They Never Told Me This in Church! will inspire and challenge all who claim devotion to Jesus, and many who are searching for the meaning of his role in history. They will be enabled to read the Bible with new eyes! The confused state of divided Christendom in our time demands just such an honest and radical investigation.

In this thoughtful exploration of a sensitive issue, Tom Horner considers all the references to homosexuality in the Bible--the stories of Sodom and Gibeah, David and Jonathan, Ruth and Naomi, and passages from Deuteronomy, Leviticus, Romans, I Corinthians, and I Timothy. He includes an important discussion of the words and actions of Christ in their biblical and historical context, to determine what conclusions can validly be inferred about Jesus and sexuality. This book contains suggestions for further reading and a complete list of biblical references to homosexuality. Teachers, students, and anyone open to reconsidering homosexuality in the light of the Scriptures will profit from this clearly written work.
