Sometimes being an African American in this society seems to feel more exclusionary than inclusive - as if we somehow have to prove how we 'fit in' to the great scheme of things. Well, no more. Baba Koleoso Karade, aka Nashid Fakhrid-Deen, JD, has undertaken the task of presenting us with a manual, a guide if you will, that can be used by groups across the Diaspora to assist their young men in recognizing and understanding what kinds of beings they truly are through a rites-of-passage program. Reaching Black Males Through Spirituality is a guide that not only advocates a way to overcome the danger and destructiveness in our society, but also connects our life in America with the holistic wisdom of our ancestors. Reaching Black Males Through Spirituality is a real and practical textbook that teaches our black males how to become MEN in America using the foundation of African principles. Koleoso tackles issues from teenage sex to racism and the problem of street violence in our community, offering healing guidance on the central problems facing the African American Community.

As Black men continually face challenges while seeking to graduate from college, researchers and educational leaders have continuously sought ways to understand and remedy the issues. Spirituality and religion have been found to have positive influences on Black students' success in college. This study was designed to explore the role of spirituality and religion in the lives of Black men at a large and research-oriented Predominately White Hispanic Serving Institution in Texas. A general qualitative approach was used to examine how spirituality and religion among Black undergraduate men influenced their ability to persist and graduate. Interviews were conducted with 10 Black undergraduate men who identified as being spiritual and/or religious. A conceptual framework based on the major themes from Herndon (2003) and Wood and Hilton (2012) was used as a lens to interpret the findings. The major findings suggest there are both internal and external components of spirituality and religion that positively influence persistence and graduation for Black undergraduate men. Connecting students to their purpose, the importance of personal relationships, and institutional sources of support were key elements found to contribute to student success for Black men in college. This study helps extend the conceptual framework by adding new components and describing the influential role of spirituality and religion at large Predominately White Hispanic Serving Institutions.

Black men need hope to survive and, ultimately, flourish. As mental health is a critical but often neglected issue, especially among Black men, Care for the Mental and Spiritual Health of Black Men examines that sensitive topic in conjunction with reflections on race, gender, sexuality, and class to offer a hopeful and constructive framework for care and counseling, particularly for Black men. These are not separate from spiritual health and growth, as well, but both are integral to holistic, dynamic wellbeing. In this, the author provides a careful and critical analysis of spiritual hope and healing as ingredient to individual and communal flourishing. As such, this volume will be a vital resource for health practitioners, spiritual caregivers, and providers in community care who serve to bolster the mental wellbeing of Black men.

Today's black man has had his God-ordained manhood redefined by the masses of secular society. Hollywood movies and Hip Hop artists have taken manhood from a passionate love story about a strong male who loves his wife and children to a horror flick about thugs, ho's and children born to a world of bling bling. We find ourselves spending more money on self image, golf courses, sporting events and alcohol, and then we give to our local Church. Most black men tend to think their spirituality or relationship with God,is showing up occassionly to Church This book helps understand the spiritual withdrawl which lies in the heart of today's black man. Each chapter uncovers the positive attributes and continued slave mindset of black men in America. True success is not defined by how much money you have, how big your house, or level of popularity, rather a man who decides to submit to Jesus Christ.

From Prayers to Players was written with the hope that black men would see beyond what is obvious with their physical eyes and into the world where the answers really are""the spiritual realm. It is the realm of the spirit where too many black men are deficient. Spiritual deficiencies lead to mental (thought) deficiencies because right and wrong begin in the spiritual realm. Put another way, what we hold in our hearts lead to what transpires in our lives. Our belief systems are based on negative information perpetuated by our own people. Not only is the negative information perpetuated but it is acted upon as truth. Our "truths" are at odds with the truths of the Lord; this is to our detriment. Our truths have led to and continue to lead to mass incarceration of black men, young and old. Our truths have led to and continue to lead to the mass murders of black men and teenagers at the hands of other black men and teenagers. Our truths have led to and continue to lead to single-parent homes and poverty. Our truths have led to impregnating black women we do not love and bear children we do not take responsibility for. Our truths do not allow us to take responsibility for ourselves, but it does allow us to blame other people for our mistakes and shortcomings. We fight an enemy, physically who is spiritually based; therefore, we cannot see "him", the devil. From Prayers to Players is not a condemnation of black men; it is meant to be a spiritual awakening for black men. It is not a denial of racism, but racism is a flammable liquid that we, black men, provide a match to. Put another way, if someone else provides the flammable liquid, racism could not ignite without us putting a match to it, (we are responsibility too). Most of our racism is aimed at ourselves; our self-perception is in agreement with demonic influences. A lack of self-love leads to a lack of love for others. Men, through God, must be willing to lead and mentor other black men. If we mentor men through God, black people will follow.

This book is a riveting and emotionally charged with information on the plight of African American males and their transformations from the boyhood to manhood. By plight, I mean the conditions, problems, and difficulties that prohibit our young gifted African American males from becoming viable, useful, successful, productive citizens in our society. The reader will discover compelling and disturbing information, which is subtle and provocative, in the book about what it means to be alive in the twenty-first century, especially, but not exclusively, for young African American males. The transformation of the African American male is one of the greatest challenges that has confronted the African American community. This is not merely one-dimensional or a single-layer problem. I believe that the enormity, complexity, and scope of the crisis of the African American males are astounding in the American society today. In many ways, it is a kin to a tsunami that possesses the potential to annihilate everything in its wake. One can pick up this book, and it will become part of you until you reach the end, for it is one of the most interesting and creative books you will ever read. This incredible story is about how the plight of one’s life can be turned around through the process of transformation of the African American male.

Based on his dissertation research, The Retention of First-Year Black Male Students at Predominately White Private and Public Universities and Colleges provides evidence that the retention of first-year Black male students at predominately White private or public universities and colleges can be achieved. Using the experiences of six participants at a predominately White private university in the Washington, D.C. area, the book encourages Black male high school graduates who want to attend predominately White private or public universities or colleges to use those participants’ experiences—specifically the key factors that contributed to their academic success—in obtaining their college degrees. Educated Black men tend to improve their communities, provide financially for their families, enjoy higher self-esteem, and become valuable assets to their employers, perhaps even becoming business owners. Today, African-American enrollment in higher education is at an all-time high, but there is still a 20-point gap in graduation as compared to Whites at 63%. This gap has enormous economic and societal implications. “Without education, there is no hope for our people, and without hope, our future is lost.” —Journal of Blacks in Higher Education, 2009 This treatise not only offers inspiration and practical advice for Black men seeking higher education; it provides valuable suggestions for high school counselors, college administrators, and faculty who support this worthy goal.
