*Includes pictures *Covers the attempts to climb Everest from the 19th century to today *Includes accounts written by George Mallory, Edmund Hillary, and more *Includes a bibliography for further reading "Because it's there." - George Mallory's alleged response to the question of why he wanted to scale Mount Everest "While on top of Everest, I looked across the valley towards the great peak Makalu and mentally worked out a route about how it could be climbed. It showed me that even though I was standing on top of the world, it wasn't the end of everything. I was still looking beyond to other interesting challenges." - Sir Edmund Hillary People have been climbing as long as they've existed, and for those who relish the challenge, nothing can top Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on the planet at over 29,000 feet. As Sir Edmund Hillary put it, "It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves." Elaborating on that, he also asserted, "I think I mainly climb mountains because I get a great deal of enjoyment out of it. I never attempt to analyze these things too thoroughly, but I think that all mountaineers do get a great deal of satisfaction out of overcoming some challenge which they think is very difficult for them, or which perhaps may be a little dangerous. I think that the fact that something has a spice of danger about it can often add to its attraction, and to its fascination." Of course, the sheer size of the mountain and its location in Asia all but precluded Westerners from even making such attempts before India became a colonial possession of the British. Once that was accomplished, however, scientists and explorers were able to report back in depth about the Himalayas and the biggest giant of them all. From that point forward, the race was on for those who aspired to climb Mount Everest, and several of these men have gone down in history, not just for their accomplishments but for their controversies. One of the earliest and most famous mountaineers to begin climbing Everest was George Mallory, who made several expeditions in the early 1920s in an attempt to reach the summit. While there is still a lingering debate over whether he actually succeeded in 1924, the goal of being the first documented individual to reach the peak continued until Sir Edmund Hillary's ascent of Everest in 1953. Naturally, even after that, people have continued to take on one of the most extreme challenges the world has to offer. In fact, climbing Mount Everest has become enough of a business that even those with no climbing experience can pay to make an attempt to summit with experienced guides. Given how treacherous the climb is, this has been frequently criticized (including by Hillary himself), and as recently as April 2014, 16 Sherpa guides were killed on the mountain by an avalanche, but interest in Everest remains as high as ever. Reaching the Summit of Mount Everest: The History of the Famous Expeditions Attempting to Climb the World's Tallest Mountain describes the mountain and the early attempts to reach the top before Hillary's successful climb. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, you will learn about the Essex like never before, in no time at all.

In 1996, a twenty-three-year-old soldier in the British Army was flying over an African desert on a routine parachute jump. He had a lot to look forward to-a long career ahead of him in the army, a beautiful girlfriend back home. But those dreams were cut short when his parachute failed to open at eleven thousand feet. He had cracked three vertebrae and come within a fraction of severing his spinal cord. A grueling eight months of physical therapy followed. Bear had to retrain his muscles to do all of the things we take for granted-how to sit, stand, walk, even breathe. Eighteen months after his accident he overcame incredible odds to reach the peak of Everest. THE KID WHO CLIMBED EVEREST is a tale of courage and determination. Bear's quest for funding for his expedition, his seventy days on Everest's southeast face, and a narrow brush with death after a fall into a crevasse at nineteen thousand feet, make the story an essential read for anyone who's ever had a dream and made it come true.

'No one could fail to be gripped by his heartfelt excitement and emotion over what was the adventure of a lifetime' Independent At the age of twenty-three, Bear Grylls became one of the youngest Britons to reach the summit of Mount Everest. At extreme altitude youth holds no advantage over experience, and it is generally acknowledged that younger climbers have more difficulty coping with the adverse effects of mountaineering. Nevertheless, only two years after breaking his back in a freefall parachuting accident, Bear Grylls overcame severe weather conditions, fatigue, dehydration and a last-minute illness to stand on top of the world's highest mountain. Facing Up is the story of his adventure, his courage and humour, his friendship and faith.

What does it take to climb the world's highest mountain? This delightful short book reveals everything you need to know about climbing Mount Everest - and who better to tell you than Kami Rita Sherpa, a Nepali guide who holds the record for most ascents to the summit of this extraordinary mountain. In May 2019 he scaled the mountain for the 24th time. From practical considerations to mental preparation, Kami Rita Sherpa leans on years of experience to disclose his secrets. He tells you what to pack, how to train, how to embrace pressure, how to persevere when exhaustion threatens to take over you, how to deal with panic, how to know when to stop and how to cope with defeat. Drawing on observations he's made from watching people fall apart, he delves into the human psyche to reveal what it takes to climb Earth's highest mountain. Along the way, he offers moments of spiritual wisdom, and explains why sherpas always pay homage to the mountain deity through the Purja ceremony. You will find out how to listen to what the mountains are saying, and how to appreciate the silence in this age of noise.

'Everest by fair means - that is the human dimension, and that is what interests me ... In reaching for the oxygen cylinder, a climber degrades Everest ... a climber who doesn't rely on his own strength and skills, but on apparatus and drugs, deceives himself. In May 1978 Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler became the first climbers in history to reach the summit of Mount Everest without the use of supplementary oxygen - an event which made international headlines and permanently altered the future of mountaineering. Here Messner tells how the and Habeler accomplished the impossible - and how it felt. He describes the dangers of the Khumbu Icefield, the daunting Lhotse flank, two lonely storm-filled nights at 26,247 feet, and finally the last step to the summit. Everest: Expedition to the Ultimate is a riveting account of the exhaustion, the exhilaration and the despair of climbing into the death zone. The book also includes a history of the mountain, successful ascents and Messner's reflections on recent tragedies on Mount Everest. Reinhold Messner was the first to climb all fourteen peaks higher than 8,000 metres. The author of more than a dozen books on his adventures, he lives in a castle in northern Italy.
