The first comprehensive study of commentaries to the Chuang-tzu in the T'ang dynasty, this book explores the fascinating interaction between Taoism and Buddhism through a reading of the Chuang-tzu. Focusing on the commentary by the Taoist master Ch'eng Hsüan-ying (fl. 631-652), Shiyi Yu argues that, in competition with Buddhism, traditional Chinese thinking took a sharp turn in the early T'ang away from the influence of Taoist-minded philosophers in the Wei-Chin period. Characterized by being concrete and unambiguous in approaching the issue of transcendence, Ch'eng Hsüan-ying's innovative reading of the Chuang-tzu led to a new emphasis on experience and knowledge. In both these respects, his reading has not only transformed the Chuang-tzu as constructed by previous readers, but also convincingly defended medieval Taoism as a set of practical beliefs that also were grounded in the metaphysics of the time.

The rich annotation and translator's notes for these twelve tales provide insights into many aspects of Tang material culture and medieval thought, including Buddhism and Daoism. In addition to meticulously annotated translations, the book offers original texts (with some textual notes), and commentaries in the form of translator's notes, thereby joining the first volume of Tang tales as the only collections that introduce students to Tang tales while also challenging specialists interested in the field."--

Chuang Tzu is the second greatest classical work of Taoist thought and philosophy in China. It has had great influence both on China and on the rest of the world since it began to be disseminated. It is mostly written in the form of fable. All of the fables are written by traversing space-time to elucidate the Great Tao and the philosophy of life. It has shone, is shining and will shine on the development of the world with Taoist wisdom. Chuang Tzu is always an indispensible guideline to the people who are confused. As we know, the rich material world cannot change the poor spiritual world. The pursuit for material life is like a shackle, which makes it impossible for people to find a final and stable home to return to. People are deeply involved in the construction of material life without stop, but they can hardly find where their real happiness is in their lives. Faced with this universal problem, the Western society turns to Jesus for a solution while the oriental society turns to Chuang Tzu’s “leisurely and care- free” philosophy for a solution. Just like Lao Tzu, Chuang Tzu always reminds people to find for themselves the root of moral character—nature and return to it. If people do not return to the root, they will lose their real happiness of life. To taste life better, people should read Chuang Tzu; to become leisurely and carefree, people should read Chuang Tzu. Chuang Tzu can help people broaden their horizon and learn how to look at their life from a higher standing point and find real happiness for themselves. This work, though named New Paraphrase of Chuang Tzu, is actually an English version of Chuang Tzu. It is just aimed to set up a bridge between English readers and Chuang Tzu.

Research About Lao Tzu And Chuang Tzu written by Lingfeng Yan and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1959 with Taoism categories.

This book is the collection of the research that the author did on the philosophy of Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu during twenty-four years since Republic of China was established. The first chapter: "New Found on Philosophy of Lao Tzu", is the first article the author wrote about his research on Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu; in the other words, it's the first time he express himself on his result since he started the research on the philosophers during Pre-Qin dynasty, so that of course it is not very sophisticated work. The author has been reading those ancient philosophy books since very young, but what he get from the reading is just the surface; when the author get to the age of thirteen, he attended the private school in Fuzhou, Fujian, he learned a lot from teach from Mr. Qinru Chen while reading Xun Tzu, and he read Record of Grand History and did research on Mashi Wentong with Mr. Yilan Huang, and it gave him a significance change on his opinions on ancient Chinese philosophy; especially on the articles of"Quan Xue", "Xiu Shen", "Fei Xiang", "Fei Shi Er Zi", and "Xing E" in the book of Xun Tzu, left him with a great impression; and this brought him a great confusion on those ancient philosophy books he read while he was young. At the same time, he started to have untrustworthy and doubt image to the traditional explanation. After this, he kept researching from middle school until university, he focused on Mo Tzu, Han Fei, and Lao Tzu, and read the books over and over again, and he was very interested. After he studied abroad, he kept on researching on political economics and Western philosophy, and he focused on the research method, as a result, he always use the logical method in the western philosophy to read Chinese ancient books; and he got a lot of accomplishments in this side. Thisbook is the combination of Chinese ancient philosophy and Western philosophy researching method, though there are still some insufficiency in the content; butit's already very precious during this era. The draft was completed during spring that year, and he sent it to the magazine called "Zhongshan Cultural Education",hope to get the chance of release; but it was sent back after half year. He didn't give up, and sent it to the magazine called "Xue Deng", created by Shanghai news;and it was released by parts; it only got to released two thirds of the whole article, and the magazine stopped publishing because of the August Thirteen movement in Shanghai, end up with that the article still can't be fully released.Until January, 1940, he finally published this article on a pamphlet; as you cansee how unfortunate this article is.After that, the author had further research and understanding on Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu, because he doesn't trust the explanation of Chou Yi and the explanations of the books written by pre-Qin dynasty philosophers, therefore, he usually read the original version of the books; and find their philosophy system, how people usually explain it and how they illustrate each word in the book, so that I got the courage to revise A Compilation of Lao Tzu's Chapters. After that, Ipublished New Explanation of I Ching, and The Principle and the Dialectics of I, and both of these books are related to the research of Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu. I kept writing about Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu twenty years since that, but nothing could surpass that earliest paper I wrote; therefore, I find similar disadvantages on fundamental understanding, especially on the part of illustrating Lao Tzu's view of the Universe, in at least three papers of my earlier work.

"This is Thomas Cleary's translation of two classic Chinese books describing the essential philosophy and practice of Tao, written long ago as maps of the Way: Tao Te Ching and Chuang-tzu. Cleary's bold new translations restore, as no other translations have yet done, the remarkable power and mind-opening distinctiveness of the original Chinese." "Composed in China over two thousand years ago and widely regarded as classics of world literature as well as honored for their practical wisdom, the Tao Te Ching and Chuang-tzu cover a wide range of subjects, from politics and economy to psychology and mysticism, from strategies for managing stress and maintaining health to ways to strengthen one's consciousness in a turbulent world." "Together, these texts present the philosophical and practical core of classical Taoism while making Taoism's teachings more accessible than ever before to the western reader." ""Few of the world's great books," writes Cleary in his Introduction, "have achieved the perennial currency of these writings. Countless readers have found endless fascination and enlightenment in the pregnant aphorisms and fantastic allegories of these ancient classics. Over the centuries the Tao Te Ching in particular has inspired many social and spiritual movements as well as a vast body of exegetical literature."" "At one time, state colleges of mysticism were established by the Chinese government for the study of the philosophy of the Tao Te Ching, and individuals who had mastered it were sought as advisers by people of all classes, from emperors to peasants. Even when the Taoist canon was torched by order of the Mongol ruler of China in 1280, the Tao Te Ching alone was spared destruction." "Here is wonderful, insightful reading, richly enhanced by Cleary's introduction and commentary."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
