Excerpt from Translations and Reprints From the Original Sources of European History, Vol. 1: Series for 1894 The period of the Renaissance and the Reformation, which began in England with the closing years of the fifteenth century, was a period of individualism, and gave a greater opportunity of influence to men of genius than any earlier period had furnished. The loosening of the bonds of custom in intellectual and ecclesiastical system, and in political and economic organization, gave to the opinions and actions of individual men far more significance than they could have had in the Middle Ages. While the great currents of change could nut, it is true, be diverted and from their course, yet particular direction and form were given to such change by the influence of men who possessed conspicuous abilities, occupied a powerful position, or represented strong forces. Four such men especially stand out as representative men of the early part of the sixteenth century, both as guides of its movements and types of its characteristics. Cardinal Wolsey was the great statesman, lull of schemes of control and reform in church and state, and of ambition for English influence in the councils of Europe. Sir Thomas More was the representative of the "new learning," the keen critical intellect and broadened interests and sympathies which were transforming the entire habits of thought of the nation. Latimer represented she earnest protestant spirit of moral reform and revolt against the old church system. Finally, I Henry VIII was not only the central figure and dominating force in England during the period of Ins long reign, not merely the occasion of the beginning of the English Retormation, but the type and precursor of that enthusiastic national spirit which was to reach its culmination in the reign of Queen Elizabeth. To give greater clearness to the personality of these four men is the object of the following selections from the abundant and picturesque contemporary records. I. Reports Of Venetian Ambassadors. I. A Description Of Cardinal Wolsey. Sebastian Giustmiani to the Senate, September 10th, 1519. Brown, Calendar of State Papers, Venetian, Vol. I, p. 560. The Cardinal of York is the same as he whom I have styled Orion, in a work composed by me. He is of low origin and has two brothers, one of whom holds an untitled benefice, and the oilier is pushing his fortune. He rules both the king and the entire kingdom. On my first arrival in England he used to say to me, "His majesty will do so and so." Subsequently, by degrees, he forgot himself, and commenced saying, "We shall do so and so." Excerpt from Translations and Reprints From the Original Sources of European History, Vol. 3 I. The Preparations for the Crusade. Taught by the experience of the other crusaders, the barons resolved to go by sea. Venice was the city that seemed most able to furnish sufficient vessels. Accordingly, Ville-Hardouin and five other embassadors were sent to make a bargain with the Venetians. The official compact is given in full in Muratori Rerum Italicarum Scriptores, vol xii, 323. The most important difference between that and Ville-Hardouin's version is that, according to the compact, the expedition was to start on St. Peter and St. Paul's day. For the events preliminary to the crusade, as well as for all the matters connected with it, consult Pears' excellent book, "The Fall of Constantinople." The second extract relates to one of the most hotly debated subjects connected with the crusade. Did Venice treacherously make a treaty with the sultan of Egypt? If she did, her conduct and the diversion of the crusade are more easily explained. Pears, pp. 263 ff., believes such a treaty was made and quotes references to support his view. But consult Wailly's very able discussion, pp. 431 ff, in which he brings out the difficulty in reconciling the dates and endeavors to show that this L'Estoire de Eracles is entirely untrustworthy. Consult also, Heyd: Levanthandel, I, 292 ff. and 440 ff. The third extract is self-explanatory. Ville-Hardouin and Robert de Clari are the most important authorities for the fourth crusade. The first was one of the leaders and gives us an official, "inspired" account. The second was one of the poorer knights and is especially useful as he tells us what the bulk of the army knew and thought, and enables us to check the statements of Ville-Hardouin. I. The compact with the Venetians. Ville-Hardouin: Couquete de Constantinople, ch. iv, v, vi. Nos. 18-24, 30. Old French. 18. "Sire, we have come to you in behalf of the noble barons of France who have taken the cross, in order to avenge the shame of Jesus Christ and to reconquer Jerusalem, if God will permit. And because they know no people who are as able to assist them, as you and your people, they pray you, for God's sake, to pity the land of Outre-mer and the shame of Jesus Christ, and to endeavor to furnish them transports and ships of war." 19. "Under what conditions?" asked the doge. "Under any conditions that you may propose or advise, if they are able to fulfill them," replied the messengers. Excerpt from System of Modern History, Vol. 1: Rise of the Modern European System Andl conceive that a system of this kind is of value, not only for the general laws which it discloses -laws without a knowledge of which all social action must be empirical - but also, and at present chiefly, for the altered aspect in which it may lead us to regard our own times and country. There are many obvious causes which tend to make us over-estimate the import ance of both of them; and for such an error the best corrective may be found in a study which teaches us the entire dependence of the present upon the past, and the mutual relations of each member of the whole Euro pean commonwealth. Our mental state, if we derive our notions only from the phenomena that surround us, will not be very different from that of the earliest speculators in astronomy, to whom the movements and order of the world were, as yet, necessarily unknown who conceived their own earth as the unmoved centre of the universe for whom every star was a divinity, every eclipse a portent, and the ordinary changes of the seasons scarcely assured as matters of scientific cer tainty. We need a wider View, and a better acquaintance with distant objects, to enable us to correct the errors of our first impressions.
