Excerpt from Readings in Medieval and Modern History This volume is intended to provide sufficient supplementary read ing, chiefly of a biographical or narrative character, for a high - school course in medieval and modern history. The arrangement Of the volume is the same as that Of my earlier Readings in Ancient History. Each chapter deals with a single epoch or personality and presents the work Of a single author. The passages quoted are long enough to make a definite impression on the reader, thus avoiding the scrappy effect necessarily produced by a set of short, unrelated extracts. Since many Of the selections are good literature as well as good history, I hope that students will be tempted to turn to the original sources from which excerpts have been taken, and to read in them at length for their own enjoyment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Forgotten Books uses state-of-the-art technology to digitally reconstruct the work, preserving the original format whilst repairing imperfections present in the aged copy. Excerpt from Medieval and Modern History This book, as the title indicates, covers both the Middle Ages and modern times. The chapters treating the period from the sixth to the seventeenth century are reproduced from my Early European History, with minor modifications and with additional maps and illustrations. The entire work has been written since the outbreak of the World War, and its probable consequences have been kept constantly in mind. If it be true, as Bishop Stubbs once said, that nothing in the past is dead to the man who would learn how the present comes to be what it is, then surely the prime business of the author of a text-book dealing with European history is to make plain the remoter causes, as well as the immediate ante cedents, of a struggle epochal in the life of humanity. How far I have succeeded in doing so must be left to the reader's judgment. The Suggestions for Further Study contain a classified and annotated bibliography of those historical works which appear to be reasonably well adapted to the needs of pupils in secondary schools. References to the appropriate chapters of my Readings in Medieval and M odern History are also inserted in footnotes. This volume consists of extracts from the sources, chiefly of a biographical or narrative character. As stated in the preface, Each chapter deals with a single epoch or personality and presents the work of a single author. Excerpt from Outlines of Medieval History In writing an outline of European history, much of the labour of the writer must be employed in brevity of statement and in rigorous selection of matter, in omissions of what is interesting in itself and valuable for the science of humanity. In the choice of events to narrate I have been guided by their far-off results, rather than by their immediate eclat in their own time, and have tried to indicate how in the Middle Ages were accomplished the growth of modern man and the life and attitude to life of modern times. A sketch, too, must of necessity be sketchy, on the one side positive and over-clear where discreet shadows should be infused in a larger picture, on the other summary where the complexities of character or institution deserve a minuter etching. I trust, however, that the story has not wholly lost the interest of its theme, of the human strivings and the wild but purposeful convulsions by which modern Europe was made. The maps have been designed to illustrate, first, as in 2, 3, 4 and 7, the main political features of the period, and secondly, as in i, 2, 4 and 6, the factors in civilization and nationality which had so great a share in forming its history. By kind permission of the Syndics of the University Press and of Archdeacon Cunningham, Map 6, Trade-routes in the XIV Century, is taken from Western Civilisation in its economic aspects (Mediaeval and Modern Times). Excerpt from The Thirteenth Greatest of Centuries The object of the book is to interpret, in terms that will be readily intelligible to this generation, the life and concerns of the people of a century who, to the author's mind, have done more for human progress than those of any like period in human history. There are few whose eyes are now holden as they used to be, as to the surpassing place in the history of culture of the last three centuries of the Middle Ages. Personally the author is convinced, however, that only a beginning of proper appreciation has come as yet, and he feels that the solution of many problems that are vexing the modern world, especially in the social order, are to be found in these much misunderstood ages, and above all in that culmination of medieval progress - the period from 1200 to 1300. The subject was originally taken up as a series of lectures in the extension course of the Catholic Summer School, as given each year in Lent and Advent at the Catholic Club, New York City. Portions of the material were subsequently used in lectures in many cities in this country from Portland, Me., to Portland, Ore., St. Paul, Minn., to New Orleans, La. The subject was treated in extenso for the Brooklyn Institute Of Arts and Sciences in 1906, after which publication was suggested.
