This reissue, first published in 1976, considers the rapid rate of economic growth in Kenya, combined with its apparent political stability, to determine whether or not this is indeed a case of ‘growth without development’ and, if so, where the responsibility for aid lies in this situation. The book concludes that while Kenyan growth has not been to an ideal pattern, accompanied by an increase in inequality, there is little or no reason to believe that living standards have not improved. It examines the impact of aid on Kenya’s progress at both the microeconomic and macroeconomic level and provides an institutional study of the impact of aid on Kenyan Government policy formation and administration and a discussion of British aid’s political purposes and influence in Kenya. The authors conclude that some of the effects predicted by the critics of aid are visible, but that the net effect on general living standards has been strongly positive, concluding that the problems constitute a case for improving aid procedures, but not against aid itself.

This book analysed the female participation in household decision-making in agricultural households in Kenya; discussed and analysed the migration of husbands to urban areas and role of remittances; discussed the process of agricultural commercialisation, its effects and that of marital status of women on land use practices; analysed the effect of urban policy bias, commercialisation and marital status on food purchases and food availability; analysed the determinants and effects of family size and gender preference. The study found that married women participate little in household decision-making and bargaining models have little explanatory power in patriarchal societies. The book concludes that gender inequality is a lifelong burden on women s self- esteem and capabilities. It thwarts women s aspirations and restricts their opportunities and denies them the experience that would build competence and self-direction, and enable equal partnerships with men. Hence, raising the status of women through empowerment would improve women s lives, and contribute alot to the society s overall social, political and economic development.

Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, St. John's University, language: English, abstract: Gender inequality in Kenya is real. The problem of gender inequality still prevails in almost all spheres of life despite the many efforts by the government to try to achieve gender parity in all spheres. The major reason why this situation has prevailed is due to the complexity of the concept of gender equality and the fact that it has received minimal attention. Gender equality should go beyond being perceived as 'sameness'. In reality, majority of the Kenyan women and girls are facing the problem of inequality and discrimination. This paper tries to evaluate the efforts made by the Kenyan government in achieving gender equality. In addition, it seeks to look at the gaps that the government has left out leading to the current situation where there exist educational disparities, social, cultural and economic. It will also look at the efforts by the non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in bringing gender parity. Lastly, this paper proposes several interventions that need to be put in place in order to achieve gender equality.
