In the apparel and textiles industries, disposal is of great interest because the amount of textile waste produced annually is on the rise. This study was concerned with gaining comprehensive insight into apparel disposal behaviors, so the purpose of the research was two-fold. First, the research aimed to evaluate the antecedents to apparel disposal behaviors of young U.S. consumers using an extended version of the Theory of Reasoned Action. Second, the research intended to compare the young consumers' actual disposal behaviors in relation to fast fashion and non-fast fashion apparel. Four structural equation models were built to explore antecedents (i.e. environmental apparel knowledge, apparel disposal motivation, apparel disposal attitude, apparel disposal subjective norm, and apparel disposal intention) to the most commonly cited apparel disposal behaviors: resell, donate, reuse, and discard. Paired t-tests and cross-tabulations with chi-square statistics were utilized to investigate the differences in disposal rates, disposal methods, and reasons for disposal used by consumers for fast fashion and non-fast fashion apparel. Results for the conceptual framework varied from model to model. The resell model showed no significant relationship between environmental apparel knowledge and apparel disposal motivation. Additionally, no significant relationship was shown between apparel disposal attitude and apparel disposal intention in the resell model. All relationships between antecedents were found to be significant in the donate model. With the exception of the connection between apparel disposal subjective norm and apparel disposal intention, all antecedent relationships were found to be significant in the reuse and discard models. In the comparison of disposal behaviors, it was found that participants disposed of fast fashion apparel overall at a faster rate than non-fast fashion apparel. The average disposal rate for fast fashion apparel was significantly faster than the average rate for non-fast fashion apparel in both the resell and donate categories, but no difference was noted in the reuse and discard categories. Implications and future research suggestions are offered at the study's conclusion.

Past studies have considered the impact of fashion on consumer textile disposal behaviour, but have focused mainly on drivers of clothing waste. There is a paucity of studies that have sought to model consumer attitudes and behaviours regarding fashion interest, shopping frequency, and disposal methods. The main goal of this thesis was to collect information regarding the largely unexamined topic of textile waste management in Canada and to link consumer waste disposal behaviour with an individual's level of fashion interest. This study conducted an electronic survey to ask 410 people in Ontario with varying demographic characteristics how they currently manage their textile waste including personal reuse, resell, swap, take-back, donation and disposal. A 5-point Likert scale was used to ask participants sixteen questions about their fashion interest and shopping frequency to develop a fashion scale and assign each participant a fashion index value. Statistical analysis was used to establish whether there is a link between textile waste behaviour and fashion index. The results indicate that an individual's fashion index is dependent on gender and age and that there are significant differences in the way consumers with high fashion index (fashion consumers) and consumers with low fashion index (non-fashion consumers) manage their textile waste. While the majority of participants donate and dispose of unwanted clothes, fashion consumers are more interested in, and more likely to participate in, alternative methods to removing unwanted textiles. Although fashion and especially fast-fashion consumers acquire the most garments, and this inevitably leads to more unwanted garments kept for a shorter time period than non-fashion consumers, fashion consumers were found have a lower disposal rate than non-fashion consumers (38 percent to 50 percent, respectively). Results also show that while personal reuse and donation are widely practiced, so too is disposal. Many consumers demonstrated a lack of awareness about alternative channels, including take-back, reselling and swapping. However, the interest and willingness of fashion consumers to participate in these channels suggests opportunities to shift textile disposal behaviour so that the amount of waste going to landfill can be reduced. The results establish the influence of a fashion scale on consumer textile waste management practices in Ontario, Canada, which can be applied to other regions as well. Since there is usually a discrepancy between self-reported behaviour and actual behaviour, these results can only be seen as a tendency, but they nonetheless show that further research is needed into how alternative channels for textile removal can be fostered as well as the effect that alternative channels for extending the use of a garment will have on its condition and therefore its final disposal.

The purpose of this research is to explore consumer motivation of clothing disposal behaviors. The objectives are to analyze the clothing product life cycle in the disposal stage to investigate consumers' clothing disposal behaviors, motivations, and environmental concerns. A pilot study design was used in order to effectively collect and analyze data from convenience samples with college students. The researcher conducted a survey at California State University Northridge (CSUN) and Santa Monica College (SMC) campuses. The survey questionnaire included questions related to consumer shopping behaviors, demographic information, intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, disposal behaviors (donating, recycling, and discarding), and environmental concerns. Results pertaining to the clothing product life cycle indicated that the participants' "fast fashion" clothing life was less than one year after purchase. The fast fashion clothing typically was donated to Goodwill yearly. Worn-out fast fashion clothing was recycled yearly. Damaged fast fashion clothing was worn every season before it was discarded. Most of the participants were between 18 and 29 years old and belonged to Generation Y. The findings of this study provided a better understanding of consumers' complicated motivations and clothing disposal behaviors, and the research contributed to other consumer behavior research related to sustainability or marketing.

Fashion trend cycles have become increasingly fast-paced and unsustainable due to competition and consumer demand in the apparel sector. Despite having sustainable apparel choices available, consumers seem reluctant to adopt sustainable changes in their consumption habits due in part to the market allure of rapid turnover of goods, better known as 'Fast Fashion'. Paired with aggressive marketing campaigns that encourage increased consumption beyond need, the apparel industry keeps expanding at alarming rates around the world. Although it has been identified that consumers increasingly care about the unethical behaviors in the industry that negatively impact the environment, this feeling does not successfully translate into modified behavior of more sustainable consumption (McNeill & Moore, 2015). Clothing products remain important in today's consumer culture, but the sustainability of that consumption is lacking, as it often leads to excess waste. This study was conducted to identify consumer's behavioral habits of purchase, care, and disposal of apparel in order to advocate a more sustainable consumption that does not worsen the environment's quality. A quantitative research method was used to study approximately 400 participants via an online survey. The purchase behaviors, sustainability considerations, and care and apparel disposal of the participants were examined to help determine their current habits, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior. Attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control were examined as antecedents of intention with an extrinsic focus on how these variables influence the behaviors of individuals when it pertains to how they handle their clothing.
