Excerpt from The True Citizen: How to Become One This book, intended as a supplementary reader for pupils in the seventh and eighth grades of school, has been prepared with a view to meeting a real need of the times. While there are a large number of text-books, and several readers, dealing with citizenship from the political point of view, the higher aspects of citizenship the moral and ethical - have been seriously overlooked. The authors of this work have searched in vain for something which would serve as an aid to the joint development of the natural faculties and the moral instincts, so as to produce a well-rounded manhood, upon which a higher type of citizenship might be built. The development of character appears, to us, to be of far greater importance, in the preparation of the youth for the discharge of the duties of public life, than is mere political instruction; for only by introducing loftier ethical standards can the grade and quality of our citizenship be raised. It is universally conceded that ethics and civics should go hand in hand; and yet pupils pass through our schools by the thousand, without having their attention definitely called to this important subject; and only an honest de sire to aid in improving this state of affairs, has led to the preparation of these pages. "It is universally conceded that ethics and civics should go hand in hand, and yet pupils pass through our schools by thousands without having their attention definitely called to the close and real relation subsisting between the best citizenship and a noble personal character. To meet this end 'The True Citizen' has been prepared for use as a supplementary reader for pupils in the higher grammar grades. It aims to awaken the higher life of the young to open to their view these larger possibilities which inhere in them but which are frequently allowed to lie dormant, thus diminishing the life forces both in the individual a such and in his relation to the nation. In this way it is hoped to show how the natural faculties and moral instincts are jointly developed, so as to produce both a well rounded manhood and a citizenship of the highest type. The plan of the book is simple in the extreme and consists of thirty-nine chapters, one for each week, which treat of the development of the natural faculties and moral powers. The book is in four general divisions, treating respectively of The Child, The Youth, The Man, and The Citizen. We sincerely hope that the book will be universally read by the pupils of our schools." -Michigan School Moderator, September 5, 1901 "In any study of citizenship, and particularly in relation to thrift, this little book has a distinct place. It is one of the eclectic readings series, and brings out clearly the value of industry, honesty, determination, courtesy, self-control, and other indispensable qualities in their relation to the making of a true citizen....As offering concrete illustrations and driving home the arguments made in each chapter, there is included what may be called a story biography, taken from the life of some man or woman who has achieved real success. Such lives as Alfred Tennyson, Abraham Lincoln, David Livingston, Cyrus W. Field, Stephen Gerard, Thomas A. Edison, and other great characters, too numerous to receive mention. At the beginning of each chapter there is included a selected list of memory gems, taken from noteworthy writings. Altogether, the book is distinctly worth while." -Sierra Educational News, January, 1919 "It is a rare privilege to have access to such a work." -New York Education, September, 1899 CONTENTS. I. This book examines the importance, and potential, of citizenship education, using extensive qualitative data from England and Sweden. The authors draw on the work of Nira Yuval-Davis and other prominent scholars in the field to frame citizenship as membership of numerous communities, for example disability, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and social class. This intersectional approach enables a rich understanding of the experiences and capabilities of young people, and bridges the gap between the formal meaning and real experiences of citizenship. The book presents case studies from England and Sweden, two contexts that have similar societies and school systems but very different approaches to citizenship education. Using this rich data, the authors illuminate the perspectives of young learners and their teachers to understand how learners can uphold their rights and responsibilities as citizens. This book will be of interest and value to scholars of social justice and citizenship education.

Citizenship In Question written by Benjamin N. Lawrance and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-02-02 with Law categories.

Citizenship is often assumed to be a clear-cut issue—either one has it or one does not. However, as the contributors to Citizenship in Question demonstrate, citizenship is not self-evident; it emerges from often obscure written records and is interpreted through ambiguous and dynamic laws. In case studies that analyze the legal barriers to citizenship rights in over twenty countries, the contributors explore how states use evidentiary requirements to create and police citizenship, often based on fictions of racial, ethnic, class, and religious differences. Whether examining the United States’ deportation of its own citizens, the selective use of DNA tests and secret results in Thailand, or laws that have stripped entire populations of citizenship, the contributors emphasize the political, psychological, and personal impact of citizenship policies. Citizenship in Question incites scholars to revisit long-standing political theories and debates about nationality, free movement, and immigration premised on the assumption of clear demarcations between citizens and noncitizens.
