Excerpt from Brief History, Daughters of the American Revolution I have gathered facts and figures from the Smithsonian records, the American Monthly Magazine and from the Early History, a booklet issued by order of the National Board of Management, November 8, 1908. Aside from the splendid achievements of the National Society in a material way, there is one feature of its com prehensive work that appeals to me with especial tender ness. The dividing line, which was so pronounced between the women of the North, and of the South, following the Civil war, has vanished before a fuller knowledge and a more generous appreciation of the worth and intellectual ability, each for the other. Excerpt from Early History, Daughters of the American Revolution In addition to these sources of information the first Smithsonian Report will be consulted. This report contains the attested statement of members of the first National Board signed by two of the Founders, the President presiding, the Vice President in charge of organization, the Treasurer, the Historian, the Registrars, the Recording Secretary, the Chaplain and four of the Vice Presidents. The committee submits that no higher or earlier authorities than these are possible. It will therefore offer the following account, realizing fully its responsibility in the matter, and prepared fully to vouch for its work, knowing that no histories can be written in the future which will disprove the facts here given, or impeach the testimony here presented. The Cincinnati was the first patriotic society in the country following the Revolution. Then came the Sons of the American Revolution, organized in California, October 22, 1875, and composed of men and women, the latter called Daughters of the American Revolution. It was unknown at the east, when in the summer of 1881 Mr. John A. Stevens, of New York, in a conversation with Mrs. Ellen H. Walworth, expressed his intention of organizing a society of Sons of the Revolution in that State. Mrs. Walworth exclaimed, "Not without the Daughters of the Revolution, surely?" He replied. "That is a good idea, and if you and a few other ladies will meet me at the Yorktown Centennial we will draw up a plan." But no opportunity presented itself at that time and the matter was held in abeyance. In 1883 Mr. Stevens organized the Sons of the Revolution in New York, and in 1890 Mrs. Walworth assisted in founding the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, the Sons of the American Revolution having been organized independently of Mr. Stevens in 1889. On April 30, 1890, at a general meeting of the Sons of the American Revolution, in Louisville, Ky., after discussion in the convention, a vote was cast excluding women. This was telegraphed to various papers through the country, and American women were filled with indignation. Excerpt from New Hampshire State History of the Daughters of the American Revolution It was no easy task for the chairman to go over records, secre tary's, treasurer's and historian's, and select just the items required, in some cases covering over thirty years Of work. And it was hard to have to leave out mention of the beautiful music, the lectures, and the delightful social events connected with the many, many Chapter meetings, and record just our work for God, home and country. Like our Granite Hills, we have held firm to the specified outline. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine, Vol. 49: October, 1916 I believe that few of us realize how much power a great body Of good women represent. This is a power that is yours if you will awaken to its full possibilities. To this end I would urge you to keep in Close touch with your fellow mem bers, the members of your chapter, your State and particularly your National Head. It should be possible at a moment's notice to transmit to every member a message, a warning, an appeal - this can only be made possible by your personal effort. Excerpt from Daughters of the American Revolution Magazine, Vol. 53: January December, 1919 So when the Indian trails had served their purpose and the colonies began to expand and to Seek intercourse with each other, those primitive paths were no longer sufficient, and broader, smoother, and better roads were demanded. 'but development was gradual under British rule, for the home government disco-ur aged all intercourse between the colonies and strove to prevent manufacturing, wishing to reserve for its home merchants the profits of such trade. So down to the Revolutionary War our roads were little more than a broadening and smoothing of the old Indian trails, and those lead ing from one Colony to another could hardly claim that distinction.
