One Day In The Life Of The English Language written by Frank L. Cioffi and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

A one-of-a-kind handbook that uses a day in the life of written English to illustrate the benefits of effective grammar Generations of student writers have been subjected to usage handbooks that proclaim, "This is the correct form. Learn it"—books that lay out a grammar, but don't inspire students to use it. By contrast, this antihandbook handbook, presenting some three hundred sentences drawn from the printed works of a single, typical day in the life of the language—December 29, 2008—tries to persuade readers that good grammar and usage matter. Using real-world sentences rather than invented ones, One Day in the Life of the English Language gives students the motivation to apply grammatical principles correctly and efficiently. Frank Cioffi argues that proper form undergirds effective communication and ultimately even makes society work more smoothly, while nonstandard English often marginalizes or stigmatizes a writer. He emphasizes the evolving nature of English usage and debunks some cherished but flawed grammar precepts. Is it acceptable to end a sentence with a preposition? It is. Can you start a sentence with a conjunction? You can. OK to split an infinitive? No problem. A grammar and usage handbook like no other, One Day in the Life of the English Language features accessible chapters divided into "Fundamentals," "Fine Tuning," and "Deep Focus," allowing readers to select a level most suited to their needs. It also includes a glossary, a teachers' guide, and a section refuting some myths about digital-age English.

A Descriptive Grammar Of English written by Andrew Rossiter and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-05-13 with categories.

"Grammar" can often be seen as a dull and complicated art, with all sorts of dusty and quirky rules that are hard to understand and even harder to explain. This Descriptive Grammar of English - by example - shakes off the dust to present the essential principles of modern English grammar as clearly as possible, showing the simple rules that determine the standard practices of modern English, both in writing and in speech, and illustrating their use through hundreds of simple examples and familiar expressions. Most native speakers generally follow the essential rules of English grammar as if by intuition; in many cases they will be quite unaware of what the rules are... even that they exist. But rules or principles or guidelines do exist, and without them it would be very difficult to communicate properly and coherently. Grammar is the highway code of any language, and people need either to learn it, or to absorb it subconsciously, in order to speak or write proficiently. Children master the rudiments of grammar in their native language by hearing, remembering, repeating and experimenting; and up to a point this is sufficient for everyday communication. However beyond a certain level, and more importantly when learning a second or foreign language, some awareness of the rules and principles of grammar becomes useful, and in many situations, vital. Some understanding of grammar is indeed essential for anyone wanting to teach English whether it be to native speakers or as a foreign language. By highlighting (literally) hundreds of short sentences and expressions, this Descriptive Grammar of English clearly illustrates and succinctly explains the rules that govern acceptable usage of the English language today. Where necessary, it uses colour coding to show up pertinent points and to contrast different structures or functions. This is not a grammar book for grammarians; it's a grammar book for anyone, and no prior knowledge of linguistics is required. As befits any discussion of grammar, it uses the expressions or jargon that are required to explain grammar, but also explains them by including a glossary of grammatical terms which will be of value to most readers. Originally conceived for the benefit of non-native speakers of English, particularly advanced EFL and ESL students and teachers of English as a foreign or second language, it is also very much suited for school and home use in English-speaking countries. In short it is for anyone who is looking for clear and example-based explanations of how English works and is written and spoken. It covers all the main points of English grammar in a way that is understandable to any student. As well as explaining the essential aspects of English grammar, such as verbs and nouns and adjectives, it includes succinct and clearly illustrated sections on such important points as style word order and punctuation. It distinguishes where appropriate between the usages of written and spoken English, and between British English and American English. All the points covered in this grammar are copiously illustrated with examples from everyday English, including memorable and familiar expressions that are hard to forget. Children are not the only ones who learn their grammar by example.

The Grammaring Guide to English Grammar is a resource book on the grammar of Standard British English. It is intended for intermediate to advanced students of English as a second or foreign language who have already studied the basic grammar of English. It covers the most important areas of English grammar and concentrates on structures which may cause difficulty at an intermediate level or above. The book starts with a pretest that helps you identify the areas you need to work on. The pretest is followed by eleven chapters, broken down to a number of subchapters that each deal with a specific grammar point. The related explanations are accompanied by real-life sample sentences, timeline diagrams, tables, and quotes. If a similar point or the same point is discussed in a different part of the book, you will find cross-references to that point. Where appropriate, chapters begin with guiding questions and end with revision questions. Most of the chapters are followed by exercises, including multiple choice, sentence transformation, error correction, gap filling and matching exercises, as well as communicative tasks that can be done in language lessons. At the end of the book, there is an appendix which contains a list of the most common irregular verb forms and the most important spelling rules; a list of the quotes that appear in the book; and a glossary that defines grammatical terms frequently used in the explanations. The chapters in this book are not arranged in order of difficulty. This way, the book can be used for quick reference on specific points of interest, as well as for systematic study, either as a self-study grammar book or as additional material in an ESL/EFL course. No matter which way you use the book, it is recommended that you follow the cross-references, which will lead you to further information on a given item. The exercises, which come with suggested answers, are best done using pen and paper. These exercises will not only help you to practise grammar but also to tie grammatical forms to real-world meaning.
