The verses in this book shine a spotlight on the darkest journey from the shadows lurking within these prison walls to the faint glimmers of hope and healing. Prison often transforms individuals into the very monster's society perceives them to be. Occasionally, someone manages to evade this pitfall and retains their humanity. Even within these grim confines, there are moments of beauty. If you simply open your eyes and heart, you can glimpse beyond the nightmarish existence that most inmates endure. This book is a voyage through the depths of despair, leading readers to the answers to questions they never dared to ask. Originally, I set out to write a chapter book recounting the events I'd experienced in the penitentiary. My descriptions of these often-horrific events were meticulously detailed, yet oddly devoid of a crucial element-emotion. Yes, there were facts and details aplenty, but each story lacked any emotional resonance. I remained oblivious to this until my wife started reading it. She pointed out that it read more like a newspaper article presenting facts without any emotional involvement in the events. Initially, I couldn't fathom the nearly complete disconnect I had from my own emotions. I had also interspersed poetry between some of the stories. These somber poems brimmed with the emotions missing in my prose. Fear leaped off the pages, the agony of being torn away from a loved one poured forth like wine, and the darkness of solitude nearly snuffed out the room's light. Then came the most unexpected revelation of all-within those verses, I discovered hope. Something I had lost after enduring and witnessing years of fights, stabbings, murders, and rapes. The poetry compelled me to confront the stain prison had imprinted upon my very soul. Through poetry, I unearthed the emotions I had concealed to shield myself. My wish is that you find your own hope and humanity within these verses, just as they aided me in reclaiming my hope and humanity for life. Dean McGinnis, Author Copyright (c) 2024 by Dean McGinnis. Prison Poetry written by D. Jerone and has been published by CreateSpace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-21 with Poetry categories.

Many people who have entered the prison system glorify life behind bars, and treat sentences of more than one hundred years as something worthy of boasting rights. However, while serving ten years, poet D. Jerone vowed that he would not get trapped in the revolving door of prison culture, to land back inside again and again. Prison Poetry is the first in a planned series of five powerful poetry books by Jerone that chronicle real, unvarnished life in prison, revealing it for the chilling, maddening, and utterly unglamorous existence it truly is. Once Jerone resolved to walk out of prison a changed man, he found strength and sanity in pouring out his complex emotions through poetry. Soon, other inmates sought him out to help them express their own feelings, which are also represented in Jerone's writings. Anger, betrayal, fear, hope, and joy are but a few of the reactions that resonated with the poet, as he looked back at his life in the outside world and looked ahead to freedom as a different man. Prison Poetry shares his many impressions of life interrupted so that others will benefit from his journey.

People, who found out I write poems, ask me to write them poems, so I was really busy and I was really happy to do that. Some of them were from treatment, jail, and prison. I write poems about relationships, love, and the kids. I am sober now, and when I read my poems again I feel bad about the things I lost when I went to prison. My kids are really happy now. I'm proud of my kids and they are doing well.

By Heart written by Judith Tannenbaum and has been published by New Village Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-04 with Poetry categories.

A two-person memoir that explores education, prison, possibility, and which children our world nurtures and which it shuns. At the books core are two stories that speak up for human imagination, spirit, and the power of art. "A boy with no one to listen becomes a man in prison for life and discovers his mind can be free. A woman enters prison to teach and becomes his first listener. And so begins a twenty-five year friendship between two gifted writers and poets. The result is By Heart a book that will anger you, give you hope, and break your heart." - Gloria Steinem Judith Tannenbaum and Spoon Jackson met at San Quentin State Prison in 1985. For over two decades they have conferred, corresponded and sometimes collaborated, producing very different bodies of work resting on the same understanding: that human beings have one foot in darkness, the other in light. In this beautifully crafted exploration, part memoir, part essay, Tannenbaum and Jackson consider art, education, prison, possibility, and which children our world nurtures and which it shuns. At the book's core are two stories that speak for human imagination, spirit, and expression. Judith Tannenbaum is a nationally respected educator, speaker, and author. Among her books are the memoir, Disguised as a Poem: My Years Teaching Poetry at San Quentin; two books for teachers: Teeth, Wiggly as Earthquakes: Writing Poetry in the Primary Grades and (with Valerie Chow Bush) Jump Write In! Creative Writing Exercises for Diverse Communities, Grades 6-12; and six poetry collections. She currently serves as training coordinator with WritersCorps in San Francisco. Born into a family of fifteen boys in Barstow, California, Spoon Jackson was sentenced to Life Without Possibility of Parole when he was twenty years old. Spoon discovered himself as a writer at San Quentin; played Pozzo in the prison's 1988 production of Waiting for Godot; and has written, published, and received awards for plays, poetry, novels, fairy tales, short stories, essays, and memoir during the more than thirty years he has been behind bars. His poems are collected in Longer Ago.
