In recent decades, tattoos have gone from being a subculture curiosity in Western culture to mainstream and commonplace. This two-volume set provides broad coverage of tattooing and body art in the United States today as well as around the world and throughout human history. In the 1960s, tattooing was illegal in many parts of the United States. Today, tattooing is fully ingrained in mainstream culture and is estimated to be a multi-billion-dollar industry. This exhaustive work contains approximately 400 entries on tattooing, providing historical information that enables readers to fully understand the methods employed, the meanings of, and the motivations behind tattooing—one of the most ancient ways humans mark themselves. The encyclopedia covers all important aspects of the topic of tattooing: the major types of tattooing, the cultural groups associated with tattooing, the regions of the world where tattooing has been performed, the origins of modern tattooing in prehistory, and the meaning of each society's use of tattoos. Major historical and contemporary figures associated with tattooing—including tattooists, tattooed people, and tattoo promoters—receive due attention for their contributions. The entries and sidebars also address the sociological movements involved with tattooing; the organizations; the media dedicated to tattooing, such as television shows, movies, magazines, websites, and books; and the popular conventions, carnivals, and fairs that have showcased tattooing.

The Tattoo Project written by Deborah Davidson and has been published by Canadian Scholars this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-12-15 with Social Science categories.

Disrupting commonly held notions about who gets tattooed and why, The Tattoo Project describes, illustrates, and celebrates the social significances of commemorative tattoos. Written by scholars from various disciplines, as well as by community members and practitioners, this edited collection considers the meanings people make from their experiences of love, loss, trauma, resilience, and change, and why they choose to inscribe those meanings on their bodies. This methods-based text also examines the process of building a community-contributed digital archive of tattoo photos and stories, the result of which inspired the contributions to this book. Writing at the intersections between the public and the private, the authors consider the production and mobilization of knowledge across communities, disciplines, and space. Featuring beautiful tattoo photography, personal narratives from project participants, and original poetry by Priscila Uppal, The Tattoo Project is a novel read that bridges the gap between academic and popular audiences. This timely collection is a valuable resource for courses across the social sciences and humanities and for anyone interested in tattoos and their significance.

Creating this book wasn't in our plan, and staying two months in red light districts was definitely never part of our plan. However, when you stare reality in the face, or in our case, wake up next door to it; you have the chance to change your plans. We didn't do anything drastic or noteworthy, we never busted down a brothel door or planted secret cameras, in fact our response was shockingly small- we simply decided to make ourselves available. We shrank down our judgments and walked up willing to be fully there, to listen, to speak, and to understand. The voices of the women sounded surprisingly like our sisters and mothers, the voices of the men like our fathers and brothers. We make this book for ourselves, in order to remember these people and to remember the face of our God whom we saw in the midst of it. These pages of art are our reactions to the darkness and the heaviness, as well as the resounding joy and forgiveness that live in these two countries.

Deeply Rooted is a collection of my works which tell the inside story. Stories told through the voice of poetry. These works were inspired by tales of happiness and sorrow; love, deceit, strength, courage, friendship and second chances. It pays tribute to those gone but not forgotten and most importantly it is a reflection of the power of faith and love. Deeply Rooted takes us on a journey that reminds us to live each day as if it were our last. A journey that takes us back to our roots and brings us full circle as we experience todays struggles and our hopes and dreams for a brighter tomorrow. All shared throughout the pages of this collection which is sure to evoke one emotion or another Deeply Rooted within. My God has blessed me with this awesome gift of story- telling through poetry. He has given me the courage to open up and share this gift, these experiences. I hope at some point along this journey you too can see yourself. Perhaps youve walked that very same road, although your destination may have been vastly different. If so, then the one thing that always got me through those tough times was true; the belief that you never walk alone. Someone has walked this very road ahead of you or in your footsteps left behind. As you turn each page, may you find the strength to endure and the faith to venture onto the next chapter of your life while holding your head up remembering that despite all else, God loves you and so do I. Deeply Rooted is a gift I want to share with you and may you continue to be inspired long after you turn the last page.

In Body Politic, David Shields looks at contemporary America and its mythology through the lens of professional and college sports. The result is an unusually insightful and provocative book about an empire in denial. Shields relentlessly examines the way we tell our sports stories (both fictional and nonfictional), considers the kinds of athletes we choose as heroes, and delineates the lessons and values we glean from sports. He explores the intricate and telling relationships between players and coaches, black and white players, immigrant and native players, male and female players, players and broadcasters, players and fans, and players and advertisers. In the process, he shows us the stories we Americans tell ourselves about the kind of people we believe ourselves to be.

Ever since the term "creative nonfiction" first came into widespread use, memoirists and journalists, essayists and fiction writers have faced off over where the border between fact and fiction lies. An early and influential book on questions of form in creative nonfiction, Bending Genre asks not where the boundaries between the genres should be drawn, but what happens when you push the line. The expanded second edition doubles the first edition with 23 new essays that broaden the exploration of hybridity, structure, unconventionality, and resistance in creative nonfiction, pushing the conversation forward in diverse and exciting ways. Written for writers and students of creative writing, this collection brings together perspectives from leading writers of creative nonfiction, including Michael Martone, Brenda Miller, Ander Monson, David Shields, Kazim Ali--and in the new edition--Catina Bacote, Ira Sukrungruang, Ingrid Horrocks, Elena Passarello, and Aviya Kushner. Each writer's innovative essay probes our notions of genre and investigates how creative nonfiction is shaped, modeling the forms of writing being discussed. Like creative nonfiction itself, Bending Genre is an exciting hybrid that breaks new ground. Features in the second edition: -Updated introduction to the new edition -Expanded sections on Hybrids, Structures, and "Unconventions" -A new section on Resistances -50 essays in all

A Poetics Of Orthodoxy written by Benjamin P. Myers and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-17 with Poetry categories.

What makes one poem better than another? Do Christians have an obligation to strive for excellence in the arts? While orthodox Christians are generally quick to affirm the existence of absolute truth and absolute goodness, even many within the church fall prey to the postmodern delusion that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." This book argues that Christian doctrine in fact gives us a solid basis on which to make aesthetic judgments about poetry in particular and about the arts more generally. The faith once and for all delivered unto the saints is remarkable in its combined emphasis on embodied particularity and meaningful transcendence. This unique combination makes it the perfect starting place for art that speaks to who we are as creatures made for eternity.

The Second Tattoo written by Wilhelm Klein Jr. and has been published by Klein Publishing House of Michigan this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-08-06 with History categories.

It is the author’s sincere hope and desire that the reader will come to understand and realize the importance and significance of the book’s title and that those who read this book will find a clearer and perhaps deeper understanding of faith in God. The author takes us through his father, Wilhelm Senior’s eyes to the eastern front of World War II. He relates how Wilhelm Senior’s faith in God helps him cope with the unbelievable circumstances of a medic in field hospitals in WWII. Author Wilhelm uses the narrative approach to make us a part of the many scenes of his story and that of his father. The importance of spiritual values and how they play into one’s behavior in stressful situations is a deeply thought provoking element of this book. The accounts are woven together with a back-drop of un-relenting faith in God, who intervened many times. There is something here for the historian and for students and observers of the human condition as well.
