Abstract: "Problem solving systems incorporating a truth or reason maintenance component have been developed for a number of different domains, including hypothetical reasoning, diagnosis, planning and circuit design. Almost without exception, the problems addressed by these systems are well structured, that is, there exists a complete and consistent statement of the problem requirements when problem solving begins. In this paper we argue that RMS (and in particular assumption-based truth maintenance systems) can also be applied to ill-structured problems. We describe a hybrid ATMS-blackboard architecture which has been employed in the development of a number of design support systems in different domains and briefly outline some of the questions raised by our experience with the architecture."

This book provides a systematic in-depth investigation of a class of multiple-context assumption-based multiagent reasoning problems, typical, e.g., for distributed planning, scheduling, and control. First, logical and architectural foundations are provided to construct the two systems XFRMS and MXFRMS allowing the development of more complex utilities. Then the technology developed for XFRMS in the single-agent case is further enhanced to the multiagent situation. The multiagent RMS MXFRMS provides, along with XFRMS, a solid foundation for building more complex utilities, such as plan or schedule maintenance systems. In the final chapter, the software engineer confronted with the task of building a practicable multiagent system can find a discussion of potential uses and future extensions of the systems provided.

Planning and Control of Maintenance Systems is the first book to address maintenance and repair from an engineering perspective. Using the innovative concept of total productive maintenance (TPM) and written by three renowned experts in statistics, operations research, and engineering, it is an essential tool for planning a maintenance system using statistical and optimization techniques in order to avert equipment failure. Suitable for engineers and managers in capital-intensive industry, as well as for first-year graduate students and undergraduates in mechanical or industrial engineering.

Abstract: "In developing a rule-based bottom-up inference system employing some kind of non-monotonic reasoning, a major part of the programming effort is spent on dynamic maintenance of the validity and consistency of the information the system is working on. Programming this type of maintenance can be rendered unnecessary by supporting the production system with a reason maintenance system: the reason maintenance system then performs the task of ensuring the validity and consistency of information. In this paper, we propose an architecture for supporting a rule-based bottom-up inference system with a justification-based reason maintenance system. The architecture proposed is outlined and the encoding of the information that is exchanged between the two systems co-operating in the architecture is detailed. In addition, we indicate how bottom-up programming benefits from the support provided."

Analyzing maintenance as an integrated system with objectives, strategies and processes that need to be planned, designed, engineered, and controlled using statistical and optimization techniques, the theme of this book is the strategic holistic system approach for maintenance. This approach enables maintenance decision makers to view maintenance as a provider of a competitive edge not a necessary evil. Encompassing maintenance systems; maintenance strategic and capacity planning, planned and preventive maintenance, work measurements and standards, material (spares) control, maintenance operations and control, planning and scheduling, maintenance quality, training, and others, this book gives readers an understanding of the relevant methodology and how to apply it to real-world problems in industry. Each chapter includes a number exercises and is suitable as a textbook or a reference for a professionals and practitioners whilst being of interest to industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and industrial management students. It can also be used as a textbook for short courses on maintenance in industry. This text is the second edition of the book, which has four new chapters added and three chapters are revised substantially to reflect development in maintenance since the publication of the first edition. The new chapters cover reliability centered maintenance, total productive maintenance, e-maintenance and maintenance performance, productivity and continuous improvement.
