You know you're in for a humorous tale as soon as you see the author's pen name and read the Preface. Before Lee had even surrendered, A. Rifleman was quickly scribbling his memoirs, having just been released from five months in Yankee penitentiaries. With his remarkable (very colloquial) vocabulary and spelling, he entertains throughout, while exhorting you to understand that he is painting an unvarnished portrait. He even begs pardon from his fellow Southerners for mentioning examples of Yankee kindnesses to him while incarcerated. This Confederate soldier was obviously educated, however bad some of his spelling (why his editor didn't correct it is unknown). We have left it all intact. He even tosses in use of French and Latin, and makes up his own words where he feels it's necessary. "Any super-fastidious reader who objects to my word-coinage, is hereby informed, that he is at perfect liberty to draw his pencil through the obnoxious polysyllable..." Much has been written about the horrors of Andersonville and Libby in the South. The book is also valuable for its depiction of northern POW conditions during the American Civil War. Every memoir of the American Civil War provides us with another view of the catastrophe that changed the country forever. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Sonallah Ibrahim written by Starkey Paul Starkey and has been published by Edinburgh University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-02 with LITERARY COLLECTIONS categories.

This volume is designed as an introduction to the contemporary Egyptian author Sonallah Ibrahim, one of the most important Arabic novelists of the modern era, with an unrivalled reputation for independence and integrity among contemporary Egyptian writers. The first study in any language devoted exclusively to Sonallah Ibrahim, the volume discusses each of the author's novels individually, beginning with the seminal Tilka al-ra'iha [That Smell] (1966) and ending with al-Jalid [Ice] (2011). Each work is discussed individually in its literary, social, historical and political context. The volume traces the evolution of Sonallah Ibrahim's work in terms both of their themes and of their literary technique, and concludes with an attempt at an overall evaluation of the author's contribution to the contemporary Egyptian novel. Paul Starkey's account shows how innovative and stylistically rich the Arabic novel has become over a period of some fifty years, beyond the better-known work of writers such as Naguib Mahfouz and Yusuf Idris. As such, the volume will serve as an introduction not only to the individual author but also to the development of Egyptian (and, more generally, Arabic) literature over the last half century.

Excerpt from Battle Field and Prison Pen, or Through the War, and Thrice a Prisoner in Rebel Dungeons Much has been written of this struggle, but the author would surely be presumptuous to imagine that he could fully cover the ground of the four years' mighty struggle that, like a tempest of death, swept over the land. Much also was writ ten at the close of the war, which in the hurry and anxiety to get the literature of the war into the market, was erroneous. 'The history of language has never seen anything like this. Ellen's mobile grammar travelogue, presented with an engaging humour and humility will appeal to anyone with an interest in the way English works - which means all of us. Reality television? This is reality grammar.' -David Crystal, author of How Language Works For fans of Gyles Brandreth, Susie Dent and Bill Bryson, an unconventional guide to the English language drawn from the cross-country adventures of an itinerant grammarian. When Ellen Jovin first walked outside her Manhattan apartment and set up a folding table with a sign reading "The Grammar Table," it took about 30 seconds to get her first visitor. Everyone had a question for her. The Grammar Table was such a hit - attracting the attention of The New York Times, NPR, and CBS Evening News - that Ellen soon hit the road, travelling across the U.S. to answer questions from students, retired editors, bickering couples, and anyone else who uses words in this world. In Rebel with a Clause, Jovin shares the heartwarming and humorous stories of the people she meets, and what is most on their minds, grammatically speaking - from the Oxford comma to the places prepositions can go, the likely lifespan of 'whom,' semicolonphobia, and so much more. Rebel with a Clause combines the qualities of a first-class work of reference with the laugh-out-loud pleasure of a good read. Punctuated with linguistic debates from tiny towns to crowded cities, this grammar romp will delight anyone wishing to polish their prose or revel in our age-old, universal fascination with language.
