Canadian public finances continue to feel the effects of the recent recession. Federal and provincial governments continue to run deficits, and the return to economic prosperity will likely be slower, and more modest, than had once been hoped. Pensions place considerable pressure on public finances, both through expenditure requirements, and mounting deficits within pension funds. Many private companies and not-for-profit organizations face the same challenge. Across Canada, there is agreement that pension issues must be reviewed and addressed. In approaching this challenge, the Province of New Brunswick and Canada's Public Policy Forum have partnered to launch Pension Reform: the New Brunswick Model and Direction for Canada. This forward-looking initiative will build upon the recent pension reform efforts in New Brunswick, seek to draw out the lessons-learned, and understand how these changes could play a role in the broader pension reform effort across the country.

During the Great Depression, promoter, salesman, and pilot Richard Thorne McCully became an aviation pioneer, capturing much of the Maritime region from the air. Along with photographer Harold Reid and pilot Marty Fraser, McCully spent the early 1930s flying over Atlantic Canada. The photographs they took offer a rare glimpse into prominent homes, vibrant businesses, churches, farms and waterfronts that are no longer standing or have been significantly altered. Each photo has been annotated with the natural features, architecture, streetscapes, industries, sporting events and other pastimes, and colourful characters depicted. These unique bird’s-eye views from 1931 to 1939 capture the feeling of that first day in May 1931 when McCully’s small twin-engine took off from the tiny Moncton airport.
