Plasticizers Derived from Postconsumer PET: Research Trends and Potential Applications presents a roadmap to the successful use of postconsumer PET to obtain plasticizers for later use, a proposal which presents both economic and sustainability advantages. In an effort to comply with Insensitive Munitions (IM) criteria, energetic binders comprising polymer and plasticiser(s) are finding use in cast-cured polymer bonded explosives and cast composite rocket propellants. Energetic binders can be considered as cross-linked polymers that provide a matrix to bind explosive ingredients together with a plasticiser. Once cured, the polymeric binder is a tough elastomeric rubber capable of absorbing and dissipating energy from hazardous stimuli, lending itself well to IM applications. This general document outlines the most promising energetic polymers and plasticisers being considered today. Attention is focussed on several energetic polymers including glycidyl azide polymer, GAP, poly(3-nitratomethyl-3-methyloxetane), polyNIMMO and poly(glycidyl nitrate), polyGLYN, although oligomers (low molecular weight) of the polymers mentioned above, as well as a variety of nitrate esters, nitroaromatics and azido plasticisers, will also be reviewed. Finally, the review will recommend binder systems for DSTO's future energetic binder programs.

The plasticizer database was developed to contain data required in plasticizers application. Attempts were made to include large number of plasticizers used in various sectors of industry to provide information for all users and to help in finding new solutions and formulations. Plasticizers included in the database can be divided into two categories: generic chemical name compounds and commercial plasticizers which are either mixtures of several components, industrial grades of particular compound, polymeric materials, or products having unknown, complex composition. The database contains solvents representing all chemical groups of materials which considered as plasticizers. In most cases, plasticizers differ from solvents by boiling point, which is above 250oC, but some plasticizers are used as temporary plasticizers or are expect to react with other components of mixture. These substances will not meet the boiling temperature standard but will still be included since they play role of plasticizers. The large number of the plasticizers and the data fields makes this database the most comprehensive database on plasticizers ever available in any source.
