Top policy experts offer Medicare reform solutions for the millions of seniors whose health care depends on America's fastest growing federal entitlement. In Modernizing Medicare, editors Robert Emmet Moffit and Marie Fishpaw bring together a rare combination of leading scholars and policy practitioners to outline a vision for Medicare reform and provide solutions for the millions of seniors whose health care depends on it. Contributors include a former Medicare trustee, a former Medicare administrator, and a former director of the Congressional Budget Office. Detailing Medicare's biggest problems, this team of top policy experts offer solutions based on personal freedom of choice, transparency of price and performance, and market competition among health plans and providers that will secure patients more affordable, more accountable, and higher quality medical care. They also address Medicare's reform needs and analyze the promising performance of the Medicare Advantage program. The authors outline Medicare's major financial problems and the best solutions for Medicare patients and taxpayers alike. While Medicare's accelerating spending is generating higher deficits and debt, standard cost-control strategies—such as payment reductions and price controls—jeopardize patients' access to high-quality care. Contributors: Joseph R. Antos, PhD; Doug Badger; Charles P. Blahous, PhD; Walton F. Francis; John C. Goodman, PhD; Edmund F. Haislmaier; Douglas Holtz-Eakin, PhD; Brian J. New Way To Care written by John C. Goodman and has been published by Independent Institute this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-07 with Business & Economics categories.

"John Goodman is a national treasure whose New Way to Care: Social Protections That Put Families First should be national policy. It is pragmatic, knowledgeable, and accessible. Read it and help to accomplish John's wise advice." —Regina E. Herzlinger, Nancy R. McPherson Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School The COVID-19 pandemic. The Great Recession. The dot-com bust. The early '90s recession. Every decade or so a disaster hits the United States and reminds us that many American families live one calamity away from financial ruin. But what if there were a better way to help families protect themselves from life's risks? And what if that way did not further bloat large government bureaucracies and inflate even more their obscene budgets? Fortunately, author, economist, policy entrepreneur, and Independent Institute Senior Fellow John C. Goodman, Ph.D., has forged just such a path. In New Way to Care: Social Protections That Put Families First, Goodman offers a bold strategy for giving Americans more control over their destiny, while still promoting—at far less expense—the important social goals that gave rise to government safety-net programs in the first place. Here are just a few of the life-risks to which Goodman—the "Father of Health Savings Accounts," according to the Wall Street Journal—presents solutions: Growing too old and outliving one's assets Dying too young and leaving dependent family members without resources Becoming disabled and facing financial catastrophe Suffering a major health event and being unable to afford needed medical care Becoming unemployed and finding no market for one's skills. In New Way to Care, Goodman invites us to envision smartly crafted social protections that better serve the nation's families—and eliminate the risk that America's safety-net expenditures will drive the U.S. economy over a fiscal cliff. The debate in America over social insurance will never be the same. "In New Way to Care, John Goodman is consistently ahead of his time with market solutions which align incentives that respect the agency of individuals while ensuring there is a social safety net. What he writes today will be policy in the coming years." —Bill Cassidy, M.D., U. S. Senator

Praise for Partners in Health "The combination of visionary leadership, knowledge, and superb timing makes this book a winner. Health care is evolving toward collaboration and integration, and this book is essential reading for anyone wishing to change the relationships between hospitals and physicians." Donald W. Fisher, PhD, president and CEO, the American Medical Group Association "This book is a must-read for anyone committed to a high-performance health system. It spells out the practical steps that will move us toward an accessible, coordinated, patient-centered system of care. Its recommendations for payment and regulatory reform underscore the urgency of comprehensive health reform if the current misaligned incentives are to be changed to support those on the frontlines in providing the best care with prudent stewardship of resources." Karen Davis, PhD, president, The Commonwealth Fund "Closer physician-hospital integration would lead to higher quality care at lower cost. Partners in Health is a masterful guide to past integration efforts, current models of success, and thoughtful recommendations for future progress." Victor R. Fuchs, PhD, Henry J. Kaiser Jr. Professor Emeritus, Stanford University "The working relationship of hospitals and physicians must be restructured for the United States to achieve more efficient, accountable care. But addressing our urgent challenges can't wait for all hospitals and physicians to join highly structured systems. Thankfully, the authors offer steps that all the major stakeholders can take today to spur new models and start the flywheel of trust spinning at new speeds." Richard Umbdenstock, president and CEO of the American Hospital Association "Transitioning U.S. health care from fragmentation to integration, in the context of a more rational payment system, is sure to be a long and tortuous journey. Partners in Health is a kind of Fodor's Guide to the voyage. No one committed to health reform should travel without it." Susan Dentzer, editor-in-chief, Health Affairs

Mismanaged Money In American Healthcare written by Lisa Famiglietti and has been published by McFarland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08-30 with Health & Fitness categories.

Warren Buffett famously invoked the metaphor of a tapeworm when describing what healthcare is to the American economy. The United States spends approximately 20% of its gross national product on healthcare, but it is unclear where the money goes or who is minding the store. This healthcare crisis is mostly about money--not lack of money, but rather misspending of money. From the perspective of a healthcare auditor and provider, this work describes the problems of American healthcare finance and proposes solutions. Extensive charts and graphs are used to trace where money goes in the American healthcare system, while other topics such as ethics in healthcare billing, un-auditable hospital costs and scams are discussed. There is evidence that clearly identifies where the money goes, and its destination may surprise the reader.

The Fragmentation Of U S Health Care written by Einer Elhauge and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-03-22 with Law categories.

Why is our health care system so fragmented in the care it gives patients? Why is there little coordination amongst the many doctors who treat individual patients, who often even lack access to a common set of medical records? Why is fragmentation a problem even within a single hospital, where errors or miscommunications often seem to result from poor coordination amongst the myriad of professionals treating any one individual patient? Why is health care fragmented both over time, so that too little is spent on preventive care, and across patients, so that resources are often misallocated to the patients who need it least? The Fragmentation of U.S. Health Care: Causes and Solutions approaches these broad questions with a highly interdisciplinary approach. The articles included in the work address legal and regulatory issues, including laws that mandate separate payments for each provider, restrict hospitals or others from controlling or rewarding the set of providers treating a patient to assure coordinated care, and provide affirmative disincentives for coordinating care by paying more for uncoordinated care that requires more services. Business reasons for the current form of hospital organization are considered, and efficiency and design are examined and compared to other industries. The economics of current hospital organization are also taken into account. The authors examine and propose various reforms that make our health care system less fragmented, more efficient, and more medically effective.
