This book provides an historical overview of the recent developments in the history of diverse fields within chemistry. It follows on from Recent Developments in the History of Chemistry, a volume published in 1985. Covering chiefly the last 20 years, the primary aim of Chemical History: Reviews of the Recent Literature is to familiarise newcomers to the history of chemistry with some of the more important developments in the field. Starting with a general introduction and look at the early history of chemistry, subsequent chapters go on to investigate the traditional areas of chemistry (physical, organic, inorganic) alongside analytical chemistry, physical organic chemistry, medical chemistry and biochemistry, and instruments and apparatus. Topics such as industrial chemistry and chemistry in national contexts, whilst not featuring as separate chapters, are woven throughout the content. Each chapter is written by experts and is extensively referenced to the international chemical literature. Chemical History: Reviews of the Recent Literature is also ideal for chemists who wish to become familiar with historical aspects of their work. In addition, it will appeal to a wider audience interested in the history of chemistry, as it draws together historical materials that are widely scattered throughout the chemical literature.

Chemistry, unlike the other sciences, sprang originally from delusion and superstition, and was at its commencement exactly on a level with magic and astrology. Even after it began to be useful to man, by furnishing him with better and more powerful medicines than the ancient physicians were acquainted with, it was long before it could shake off the trammels of alchymy, which hung upon it like a nightmare, cramping and blunting all its energies, and exposing it to the scorn and contempt of the enlightened part of mankind. It was not till about the middle of the eighteenth century that it was able to free itself from these delusions, and to venture abroad in all the native dignity of a useful science. It was then that its utility and its importance began to attract the attention of the world; that it drew within its vortex some of the greatest and most active men in every country; and that it advanced towards perfection with an accelerated pace. The field which it now presents to our view is vast and imposing. Its paramount utility is universally acknowledged. It has become a necessary part of education. It has contributed as much to the progress of society, and has done as much to augment the comforts and conveniences of life, and to increase the power and the resources of mankind, as all the other sciences put together. It is natural to feel a desire to be acquainted with the origin and the progress of such a science; and to know something of the history and character of those numerous votaries to whom it is indebted for its progress and improvement. The object of this little work is to gratify these laudable wishes, by taking a rapid view of the progress of Chemistry, from its first rude and disgraceful beginnings till it has reached its present state of importance and dignity. I shall divide the subject into fifteen chapters. In the first I shall treat of Alchymy, which may be considered as the inauspicious commencement of the science, and which, in fact, consists of little else than an account of dupes and impostors; every where so full of fiction and obscurity, that it is a hopeless and almost impossible task to reach the truth. In the second chapter I shall endeavour to point out the few small chemical rills, which were known to the ancients. These I shall follow in their progress, in the succeeding chapters, till at last, augmented by an infinite number of streams flowing at once from a thousand different quarters, they have swelled to the mighty river, which now flows on majestically, wafting wealth and information to the civilized world.

Excerpt from A New Era in Chemistry: Some of the More Important Developments in General Chemistry During the Last Quarter of a Century My apology for adding another book to the literature of chemistry, is that I have lived during the "New Era," have known well most of the men who have been instrumental in bringing it about, and have been a student of the three leaders in this movement - Van't Hoff, Arrhenius and Ostwald. Excerpt from Lectures on the History of the Development of Chemistry: Since the Time of Lavoisier In placing these lectures before a wider section of the public, I consider it essential to indicate the point of view from which they have been prepared. I regard them as an attempt to follow the development of our ideas of to-day from those that were formerly current. Hence I have only gone back as far as Lavoisier; because our science assumed a new aspect in his hands, and because it may be held that, as regards development, we are still passing through the epoch inaugurated by him. It has been my wish to arrange the matter of the lectures in such a way that the student may be enabled to obtain a survey of this portion of the history of chemistry with little trouble, and at the same time so that it may serve as a guide for those who may desire to engage their attention more particularly with special investigations in this department. On this account I have expressed myself as concisely as possible, whilst, on the other hand, I have supplied moderately complete references to the original literature in connection with the subjects treated of. The developments in information technology in the last decades of the 20th century have fundamentally changed the way in which scientific information is being communicated and used. A scientific discipline where the impact of these changes has been particularly significant is (bio)chemistry. Up to less than 25 years ago, molecular modeling was a hardly-existent computational chemistry niche, only practiced at those few institutes that could afford the very expensive specialised hardware. Also rapid access to not only the primary literature but, possibly even more importantly, to the factual primary data about millions of chemical compounds, to reactions, structures, and spectra, and to the genomic data of various organisms including humans, can only be provided by digital storage and retrieval techniques. This book seeks to document some key developments in computerized chemical information in the last two decades of the past century. To put the developments into a historic perspective, the three opening chapters present review articles on the founding, the history, and the operation of three different representative European computer chemistry institutes. These introductory chapters are personal accounts of history and development and clearly show the different approaches and aims in setting up these (academic) research and/or service facilities for computer-aided chemistry and cheminformatics. The following chapters form a bridge to recent cheminformatics research by covering selected topics in the fields of organic synthesis, drug design, crystallography, modeling and chemistry teaching.

Written by a pioneer in the development of spin labeling in biophysics, this expert book covers the fundamentals of nitroxide spin labeling through cutting-edge applications in chemistry, physics, materials science, molecular biology, and biomedicine. Nitroxides have earned their place as one of the most popular organic paramagnets due to their suitability as inhibitors of oxidative processes, as a means to polarize magnetic nuclei, and, in molecular biology, as probes and labels to understand molecular structures and dynamics AS DRAGS FOR CANCER AND OTHER DISEASES. Beginning with an overview of the basic methodology and nitroxides’ 145-year history, this book equips students with necessary background and techniques to undertake original research and industry work in this growing field.

This volume summarises recent developments and possible future directions for small molecule X-ray crystallography. It reviews specific areas of crystallography which are rapidly developing and places them in a historical context. The interdisciplinary nature of the technique is emphasised throughout. It introduces and describes the chemical crystallographic and synchrotron facilities which have been at the cutting edge of the subject in recent decades. The introduction of new computer-based algorithms has proved to be very influential and stimulated and accelerated the growth of new areas of science. The challenges which will arise from the acquisition of ever larger databases are considered and the potential impact of artificial intelligence techniques stressed. Recent advances in the refinement and analysis of X-ray crystal structures are highlighted. In addition the recent developments in time resolved single crystal X-ray crystallography are discussed. Recent years have demonstrated how this technique has provided important mechanistic information on solid-state reactions and complements information from traditional spectroscopic measurements. The volume highlights how the prospect of being able to routinely “watch” chemical processes as they occur provides an exciting possibility for the future. Recent advances in X-ray sources and detectors that have also contributed to the possibility of dynamic single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods are presented. The coupling of crystallography and quantum chemical calculations provides detailed information about electron distributions in crystals and has resulted in a more detailed understanding of chemical bonding. The volume will be of interest to chemists and crystallographers with an interest in the synthesis, characterisation and physical and catalytic properties of solid-state materials. Postgraduate students entering the field will benefit from a historical introduction to the subject and a description of those techniques which are currently used. Since X-ray crystallography is used so widely in modern chemistry it will serve to alert senior chemists to those developments which will become routine in coming decades. It will also be of interest to the broad community of computational chemists who study chemical systems.
