Publié en 1967, Recherches en ethnométhodologie est un des ouvrages les plus originaux et les plus novateurs de la sociologie de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle. Il est devenu un classique et a inspiré un courant de recherche très diversifié qui s'est développé un peu partout dans le monde depuis les Etats-Unis, sous le nom soit d'ethnométhodologie, soit d'analyse de conversation. Son auteur, Harold Garfinkel, né en 1917, a été professeur de sociologie à l'Université de Californie à Los Angeles. Reprenant à son compte le questionnement de Talcott Parsons sur la genèse de l'ordre social, il s'est appuyé sur la phénoménologie husserlienne, telle qu'elle a été introduite dans la sociologie par Alfred Schütz à partir des années 1930, pour éclairer le problème autrement que Parsons. L'argument de Garfinkel consiste, pour l'essentiel, à considérer l'ordre et l'intelligibilité du monde social comme sensibles et concrets, et à rapporter leur production et leur maintien à des opérations, réglées normativement, que les agents sociaux (les " membres ") font méthodiquement entre eux, ou les uns par rapport aux autres, dans la gestion de leurs affaires de la vie courante. Cette production et ce maintien sont étayés sur une " connaissance de sens commun " des structures sociales, sur les évidences constitutives de l'" attitude de la vie quotidienne ", ainsi que sur une maîtrise pratique des méthodes et procédés d'organisation des activités ordinaires.
